Part 2
Kev’s Final Prank
Tonight was the wake for my dear friend and partner-in-crime, Kevin Harold. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Kev and I found humor in everything—and tonight, true to form, was no exception.
Mary and I arrived at the appointed time at the funeral home. As I climbed the front steps—moving a little slower these days with my cane and lack of balance—a young lady coming out, held the door for me. Mary was just behind me, at my six o’clock.
Then, without any warning, my pants dropped to my ankles.
Mary gasped, “Oh my God,” and instinctively grabbed the back of my pants just as I fumbled for the front. You’d think we had rehearsed it—the timing was perfect, the teamwork flawless. She looked at me and whispered, “What the hell just happened?”
Inside, I was already laughing. God damn it, Kevin, you got me again.
Somehow, no one seemed to notice. We walked into the wake like nothing had happened, straightened up and composed. We greeted Kev’s daughters, his siblings, his loved ones, and paid our respects.
As the night wore on, I knew I couldn’t leave without sharing this final moment—my last little adventure with Kev. Before we left, I made my way to the front of the room where Judy, Kevin’s partner, was sitting. I told her what had happened out front. We both burst out laughing, the way Kev would’ve wanted.
And I swear—honest to God—I saw the faintest little smile cross Kevin’s face as he lay there in the big box.
Love you, Kev. You never missed a chance to make me laugh—even from the great beyond. See you on the other side… but next time, I’m wearing suspenders.

Today I am reminded just how precious this journey of Life is.  I received the call this morning that Kevin Harold had passed. Kevin was my college roommate and life long friend and co-conspirator on this journey. We were envolved  in all types of capers in college, into ups and downs of love and careers and now in this phase dealing with health issues. The one common factor we had was we could find the humor in everything and we enjoyed a good laugh whenever we spoke.  We stayed in touch for well over 50 years and always felt better after reaching out then before the call. I will miss my friend and buddy. I am picking up our other roommate, Bill McHugh, from Buffalo, NY for the “last good bye”. The three of us were planning on a get together that will never be.  Mary was our unofficial roommate and is feeling the loss as well. Rest in Peace Kev, hope to see you on the other side…

Kevin Harold was my mother Judy’s best friend and partner in life, I lived with Kevin in Bayville on and off for a little over ten years. Kevin exemplified many father-like Godly characteristics. Always loving my mom, communicating, sharing time together with family, relatives, and friends-the holidays spent with Kevin were made memorable. I enjoyed watching many major sports events together. Kevin always shared  a warm, hilarious, edifying story about his immediate family and friends. Hard working, at work or at home, Kevin lived unselfishly, and was always available if you needed him for anything. I will miss you forever, learn the good from your life, exemplify it in mine, and share it with others to make it better.

I knew Kevin as long as I can remember...'the "Hood", St Thomas', the Prep and many nights having one maybe two at a PUB. We spent many hours in our youth playing the APBA baseball board game and playing stick ball at the Bedell Ave garage. We were both members of the Hawks little league team. Kevin the sure handed first baseman and occasional pitcher...only when his father (our coach) was out of pitchers :)

Kev and I had some fun years at St Johns Prep. He was a standout on the gridiron...Kev in those days was called "Keg Harold" and could protect the QB like no other lineman with his strength and competitiveness. Us "West Hollywood" boys were also the favorites of our Headmaster Fr Collins...although I think he liked John better than either Kev & I. Also I remember Kev was as a super campaign manager and  helped get John (The Duck...he walked like a duck) elected as school Prez in 1968! On election day Kev drove through Bed-Sty in the families' Imperial convertible followed by John walking with a real duck on a leach. John won by a landslide! Can't make this stuff up!!

Kev & I kept in touch over the many years and we always had some great laughs reliving some of those "glory days". We were both so fortunate to see his Mom and my Dad spend many memorable and fun years together as a couple. It was like a scene from the "Brady Bunch" when we got together for some Holiday cheer! 

So Kev, you lived a good and fun of a life...although way too short. I will always remember our  friendship and thinking of you will always put a smile on my face. My thoughts are with all of your family and know their memories of you will help them during this difficult time!

Kevco,  as we often called him,  was a great friend for my entire life.  Spending time with him always brought a smile and laughter,  and playing golf with him often was always a hoot.  
His love and respect for Judy is an example for all of us. 
His inner grace and thoughtful approach to life is most apparent in his 2 beautiful daughters,  Kim George and Lauren Behan and their beautiful families. 
Our world is a little less bright with Kevco no longer among us - but,  his smile,  laughter and joy of living will remain with me always. 
Requiescat in Pace.

The beloved Commissioner of our annual Jimmy Haran Memorial Golf Tournament accepting the trophy upon his victory a few years ago. The sad event of Jimmy's passing has brought our family together for this special event every June, and Kevin was always an integral part of it. Rest in peace, Kevco!

Dear Judy and family,

I know my sisters, Karen, Susan and Nancy are so sorry for your loss.
We all share fond memories of summer afternoons on the Sound Beach Avenue with you and your family. 
I personally did not know Kevin but he must’ve been a great guy and very lucky to have you to share his life with.
John and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. I know Tina is with him reminiscing about Bayville at this very moment. Probably around a bonfire.

Dear Kevin and family,

We were supposed to talk this week, but it wasn’t to be. Our last talk two weeks ago upon checking up on each of our illnesses, I said I would pray for you, sent you a copy of my prayer to the BVM for you asking for her help for you. I end my prayers Thy Will Be Done. The outcome was not what I expected nor anyone of us would. 

You were a good friend and co-worker, I was fortunate to be with. Always a smile on your face even when you weren’t feeling well. You reminded me of Billy. I know you two loved working together as you each told me separately. I could tell by seeing the camaraderie you both had. 

I will genuinely miss you, and so sorry I will not be able to attend your wake. But once I am on my two feet (no pun intended), I told Fr. Tom I would visit him, and I will visit you for a toast to you.
