

Anthony S. Leonardo, 87, passed away Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He has gone home to be with his beloved wife of 60 years, Verena and his seven siblings who he has missed dearly. Anthony was a life resident of the Syracuse area. He was employed by Eastwood Dairy, Dairylea, and retired from East Syracuse Minoa School District in 1987. A communicant of St. Matthew’s Church, he was also a member of the IAAC Club. A veteran of the United States Navy, Anthony served his country during WWII as a Navy Armed Guard aboard the SS Alabaman, and the SS Alcoa Trader, as a gunner. He supported the D-Day Invasion and his several convoys brought him to Europe, Shangai, and Korea.
He is survived by three children, Mary (Mark) Leon of Syracuse, Kathy (Charles) Zacharek of Clay, and Anthony Leonardo (Judy Ramsden) of Mattydale; his beloved grandson, James Zacharek and beloved granddaughter, Danielle (Joseph) Peplinski; and his beloved “buddies”, Harry Leonardo and Louis Falgiatano, both of Syracuse; along with several beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday 8 a.m. at FARONE & SON FUNERAL HOME and 9 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Church, East Syracuse, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home, 1500 Park Street, Syracuse.
