Although I never met Ms. Smokes in person,  I read her column often.  I  admired the way she could be honest without letting her anger  rule her.  I will miss her and I send my condolences to her family and close friends.

My son, who is a journalist, met Sandy when he accepted a position with the Post Standard Newspaper in the 1990's.  Embarking upon his second job since graduating college and being a native of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, my son was like a fish out of water when he arrived in Syracuse.  Sandy was his lifesaver!  She was a safe haven to a young man who still had so much to learn, not only about being a journalist, but about life itself.  They became excellent friends and when I had an occasion to meet her I became an admirer.  Learning of her death, I share the sadness that has covered her family, friends and entire community.  Sandy is gone but the inspiration she was able to provide through her writings live on. Would that we all could leave such a legacy!  To her family and friends, my heartfelt condolences.

Well Sandy, the awesome journey of your life has came to its final resting place. We all can say, well done thy good and faithful servant. I will always remerber the good times we shared in our childhood days going back and fourth from Syracuse to Pembroke,GA. Thanks for the laughs and the love.MISS YOU MUCH. Saundra and I were the same age, we grew up in the same city, Syracuse NY. She was black, I was white. Until I started reading her column I had no idea of how different our worlds were.Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet Saundra to tell her how her writing inspired me and helped me to see past my own sheltered upbringing. Syracuse has lost an inspiration. What a sad day.

I first discovered Ms. Saundra Smokes' Post Standard/Herald Journal columns during high school (the 1980's) while skimming my parents' copy of the Herald Journal. The local news generally disinterested me back then, but Ms. Smokes' column caught my attention. I don't recall the particular subject of that column, but I vividly remember the feelings it invoked in me: Inspiration; admiration; contemplation; and  respect. Ms. Smokes continued to inspire me through her columns over the years as she consistently wrote about important, interesting, thought-provoking and smart topics while remaining accessible to her readers in the community. I've always enjoyed writing and considered Ms. Smokes an example of a journalist who displayed technical perfection and artful talent. (Many writers don't fully master either one of these two very different skills, but Ms. Smokes definitely "had it goin' on" in the talent department!) I very much respect that she used her  talents to better our newspaper and our entire community. I can only imagine how many others Ms. Smokes positively impacted. I am so very sorry for her family's loss.

Saundra is a very remarkable woman that has left her words and spirit indelibly written on our hearts.  Wishing peace and comfort to the family.

What a loss for the community and her family.  She was a great journalist and a thoughtful scholar on the topics related to contemporary sociology.  She was one of the few columnists I read with regularity. She had a gift for writing in a way that grabbed you, kept you,  and was always interesting.  She made you think, as she herself was a student of life.  I am deeply sad.  My condolences to the family and friends of the unique and beloved Saundra Smokes.

Saundra was one of my father's dearest friends and although my mother and I did not know her well, we know from his stories that she was a fantastic woman. She will be missed very much.

To the Family of Sandi, just know that my prayers are with you all. She will be greatly missed. When ever I saw her it was always with a smile. The joy of the Lord is your strength!

You will be remembered always , your thoughts were brought to life in your news paper columns, which also sparked long conversations within and outside of the community.I personally will miss your smile and your pleasant personality. What I really loved about Saundra Smokes was the variety of perspectives featured in her writing. She spoke with the voice of an African-American, a Devoted Aunt, a Community Activist, a Working Woman, a Christian. We will not see her like again. Rest in peace, Saundra.

I will always remember the cheerful smile and warm greeting I recieved everytime we ran into each other, she will truly be missed. To her family Rashaad, Jessica and all the rest may God give ya'll all the comfort and strength.

Oh my Big Sis. I can't believe that you are no longer with us. I still have many more potato greens and rice dishes to make for you. I could use another hug from you.  Thanks for being a voice for so man voiceless people. You set such a high standard for yourself and so many of us young people admired you. This is a hard loss. But God wanted one of his best. It is a sad day. We have lost a great LADY.I will miss those thought provoking articles the great Saundra Smokes always managed to write. Heartfelt condolences go out to her many loved ones. May your treasured memories help to console you. Know that so many people care & sympathize with your tragic loss. This is a LADY who will be remembered and missed.

I never met Ms. Smokes, but I began reading her Post-Standard columns in the early '90s while I was still on the Newsday copy desk.  I thought her writing and her critical thinking would have qualified her to work for Newsday or any other bigtime newspaper.  She was a solid pro, with a heart and a brain.   My condolences to her family and friends.
