

Saundra Smokes, 57, of Syracuse, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday at Crouse Hospital. Born in Syracuse, she was a life resident of the area. An award-winning journalist and playwright, Saundra was a free-lance journalist for 3½ years and a former employee of The Post-Standard for more than 30 years. She was a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, was inducted into the Syracuse Press Club Wall of Distinction, and was a member of the Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company. Saundra was a syndicated columnist for 22 newspapers nationwide, and won a Cable Ace award for a video drama. Predeceasing her in death are her parents, James M. and Rebecca Smokes; brother, James M. Smokes; and nephew, Charles S. Cook.
Survivors include her two daughters, Jessica Everson and Charla Smokes, both of Syracuse; two sons, Brandon Everson and Rashaad Shepherd, both of Syracuse; sisters, Phoebe (Eddie) Karol Brown of Syracuse, Amy R. Smokes of Schenectady, and Venita of Syracuse; very close cousin, Obie Bacon formerly of Syracuse; goddaughter, KeNa Chisholm of NYC; and a host of family, friends, and loved ones.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday 11 A.M. at Abundant Life Christian Center, 7000 All Nations Blvd., East Syracuse, NY 13057. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family in care of Amy Smokes or Kirk Park Colts Football Organization.
