Susanna Elston Romig, 90, born in Rensselaer, NY on July 21, 1920, (Clara) Susanna Elston Romig spent most of her years residing near and in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. In August of 2009 she came to live with her only daughter, Nancy Romig Radke, and son-in-law, Gary Michael Radke, in Syracuse, NY. Susanna died on Friday March 18, 2011 from natural causes in Crouse Hospital, Syracuse, NY. Raised on farms in southeastern Pennsylvania, Susanna excelled in school and after graduating from Downingtown High School in 1937, she went on to receive her teaching degree from West Chester State Teacher’s College (now West Chester University). She taught upper grades in several one room schools in the area. In 1949 she married Robert Trexler Romig (deceased January 4, 2007), and they took up residence in the newly remodeled school (built in 1876) that Robert had attended from first- to eighth-grade. In 1952 their daughter, Nancy, was born and Susanna quit teaching to raise her family and to keep the books for Bob’s custom sound specialty business. Sue and Bob were married for 57 years. Susanna was an avid gardener and created a beautiful woodland garden on her property, giving everyone who entered it much pleasure. She also enjoyed flea marketing with her husband and collected antique linens, carpet beaters and books of poetry.
Susanna is survived by her daughter, Nancy Romig Radke of Syracuse, NY; granddaughter, Lydia Elizabeth Radke of New Haven, CT, and her sister, Ruth Elston Leaman of Hallam, PA.
