Charlie Ross Jr. was born March 24, 1952 at his home in Mulberry Hollow, OK, the son of Charlie and Elizabeth Dion (Hogner) Ross. He grew up in a household with his four siblings and was a graduate of Stilwell High School. During his school days, he enjoyed playing football and softball. He continued to play slow-pitch softball as a pitcher clear into his 40s and had the meanest knuckle ball. After school, he went on to work various construction jobs, such as building bridges before finding his place at Greenleaf Nursery. He had a passion for tending to the roses and different plants, earning his position of foreman during his 10 years there. He finished the remainder of his working career for Wal-Mart before finally retiring. Although, it was his musical career that would define him throughout his life. He would meet the love of his life, Betty Sue Brown, and on October 26, 1985 they were married. Their union brought together a family of twelve children and years of memories.
Charlie’s brother Woody bought him his first guitar and the rest was history. He found his love for the guitar at the young age of 13 years old and was playing professionally just two years later. He took the stage with Jess, John, and Kenny as the lead guitarist for the Cherokee Playboys and traveled the nation playing music and had several exciting opportunities to jam with renowned artists such as Lefty Frizzle, Reba McEntire, Ronnie Dunn, and even Marty Stewart. He set foot on major stages in Las Vegas, the Grand Ole Opry, and played on the John Chick Show with the Chieftain Quartet.
Above all the many accomplishments and fame, April 11, 1993 marked a pivotal moment that would alter his life and family forever, the day he took his family to Easter service at Bunch Assembly of God. From that moment, he surrendered his talents to serve on the Lord’s stage. He became a member of Bunch Assembly of God and though hesitant at first, he heeded the word of the Lord to teach his kids to play music. As the years went by and talents developed, they became “New Creation,” spreading the gospel through music in eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado, Missouri at Silver Dollar City, and even South Dakota. The hours were long and teaching was tough at times, but the moments shared with his kids playing music and doing what he loved most created a bond that will carry on his legacy for generations. What originally had led him down a tough road, would be his saving grace and an anchor for his children. He was the “round, mound of get down” and was sure to make you laugh at some crazy thing he said. Charlie enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play ball. You could always catch him in the stands. He was faithful and a true man of God. His health began to fail and this good and faithful servant was called to his home in Glory on Thursday, July 17, 2025 in Tulsa, OK with his loving wife by his side. He was 73 years old and will forever be remembered.
