Charles Hubert Dunham, or Hubert to his friends, was born January 18th, 1930 at his grandmother’s home in Hulbert, OK, the son of Charles Henry and Lydia Josephine (Smith) Dunham. It was a bitter cold day and his Grandmother immediately nicknamed him Zero, due to the weather. He attended and graduated from Bagley High School. He was ready to begin life when he met the love of his life, Betty Lou McGowan, and they married on March 15th, 1949. This loving relationship lasted for 64 years and together they would raise a family of three daughters, Judith Lynn, Janice Lea and Brenda Kay. He began employment at the First National Bank of Tahlequah, first as a teller and finally as a loan officer. Then after retiring from there, spent another 15 years at Bank of Cherokee County, greeting and directing clients through the bank. When he wasn’t working at the bank, he was a City Councilman for 20 years, and also served on the Tahlequah City Hospital Boards and Tahlequah Public Works Council. He had the most wonderful personality, always smiling, always kind, generous and compassionate. He loved people and it showed. For extra money, he drove a school bus in Tahlequah for years. Every Friday was ice cream day and every child got an ice cream, because Hubert made sure no child was left out. He loved to spend his free time working in the yard with his wife, especially in their garden, his tomatoes were the best. Then there were the occasional trips fishing, always a favorite with Hubert. Any time spent with his daughters and grandchildren was special for Hubert, he adored them. He was a Christian by faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of Tahlequah. The Lord called this faithful servant home from his labors on June 10th, 2018 at his home with his family by his side. He was 88 years old. He will be greatly missed.
Hubert is preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, two daughters, Judith Lynn Dunham and Janice Lea Waddle, one brother, Donald Ray Dunham and his grandparents.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Brenda Kay Jones of the home in Tahlequah, OK and Gayla Jo Walker-Fanning of Eureka Springs, AR, who was like a daughter to him. His legacy lives on through is two grandchildren, Charles “Bob” Waddle of Park Hill, OK and Brandie Kay Waddle-Walker and husband Argus of Keys, OK, six great-grandchildren, Lacee Michelle Fielden and husband Caleb, Peyton Dunham, Kade Waddle, Charles Waddle, Gracee Walker and Nolan Walker, two great great-grandchildren, Draigen Fielden and Valen Fielden, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
