JoAnn McCarter Fields was born on April 13th, 1951 in Tahlequah, Ok, the daughter of Louis and Jessie Mae (Stover) McCarter. She attended school at Oaks and later attended and completed a vocational course of Early Childhood development. On September 22nd, 1968, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Selven Fields. Together they would share 48 years of happy memories and laughter, and raise eight children, Darlene, Elmer, Joey, Vanessa, Rick, Tonia, Laura and Tony. JoAnn worked for many years at Cherokee Nation for the Child Care Center and as an Immersion teacher of the Cherokee language. She adored children and loved helping them to learn and grow. When she had free time, she was home chasing her children and grandchildren around, and enjoying every moment she had with them. She loved to jump into the car with one of her daughters and take off down the road to go shopping, seeing the sights. She was happy to do a bit of sewing, flower arranging, cake decorating, and cooking large home cooked meals for her family, her breakfasts of biscuits and gravy were the best, her fry bread and beans, fried potatoes, fried chicken, knuche and bean balls were never duplicated. A Christian by faith, she served the Lord of the days of her life at Long Prairie Baptist Church, serving in the WMU, serving on the food committee for years, and providing a home for every child that knocked on her door, needing a place to call home. JoAnn and Selven were devoted to each other, heart and soul. Together they found the good in every situation in life, and instructed their children in the ways to face life’s challenges head on. They wanted their children to have faith, pray to God our Father, to face the future with confidence, and always greet people with a handshake. Free time was spent loading up the family to go to Rocky Ford Park to share a family dinner and do a little swimming. She loved to hold monthly dinners and holidays had JoAnn shining with her best talents. There were days when the world was not so kind, when she lost her husband, her son Rick and her brother, Calvin. JoAnn never lost her faith, it sustained her. She would dust herself off and try again. The Lord called this wonderful woman home from her many labors on January 22nd, 2021 in Tahlequah, Ok, with her family by her side. JoAnn was 69 year old and will be dearly missed.
