

LJ spent much of his youth in Stilwell, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Stilwell High School in 1963. In 1966, he was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country in Vietnam for one year.
A lifelong lover of automobiles, LJ dedicated most of his career to working as a mechanic, specializing in Volkswagens. His passion extended beyond his profession, as he enjoyed collecting and restoring cars and trucks and playing music in his spare time. Those who knew him will remember his skillful hands, his strong work ethic, and the pride he took in every project.
In 2007, LJ married Barbara Purget McMurtrey, and together they built a happy life in Fort Gibson, where they remained until his passing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jess McMurtrey; his mother, Lillie Sharp Cook; his sisters, Mary French and Dona Faye Morton; his brothers, AJ McMurtrey, Herman “Jack” McMurtrey, and Garlan McMurtrey; and his daughters, Baby Girl McMurtrey and Jerri Cook.
LJ is survived by his sister, Irene Cornell; his children, Kristen McMurtrey-Leatherwood (John Partin), Brian McMurtrey (Jolynda), Clayton McMurtrey, and Chrissy Turney (Sean Bilby); his son-in-law, Kelly Cook; and his beloved grandchildren, Skyler, Harley, Cole, Peyton, Paige, Madalyn, and Logan. He also leaves behind ten great-grandchildren who brought him much joy.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 7, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, April 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Reed-Culver Funeral Home, with burial to follow immediately at Starnes Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Cole McMurtrey, Kelly Cook, John Partin, Sean Bilby, Billy Marsh, Cole Purget, Rusty Tuttle, and Jimmy Ferrell.
LJ will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
