Odie Lee Barnett was born July 19, 1952 in San Andreas, California at Mark Twain Hospital to Virgil William Barnett and Lena Stover Barnett. With his loving wife and daughters by his side, the Lord called him home on January 23, 2025 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 4 days.
Growing up, Odie enjoyed playing pranks and telling jokes. As a child, he loved playing playing marbles at school. He loved to play sports and was labeled “untried” as a high school football center. After high school, he attended NSU where he played football for the Redmen. He met the love of his life, Beverly Edens, in the summer of 1971. The two joined in marriage May 19,1972. From this union came two daughters Odea and Leonda, and one son, Dakota. Odie worked in construction before taking a job at the Grand River Dam Authority Coal Fired plant. The coal fired plant is where Odie worked until he retired as a Control Room Operator after 25 years of service. In 2004, Odie also obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from NSU with a triple major. Throughout his life, Odie enjoyed fishing and deer hunting. But his most treasured time hunting was spent with his father-in-law, Leon Edens, turkey hunting. In his later years, Odie could be found watching his grandsons play football, baseball and basketball. Odie’s favorite time spent was the time spent with his family at home. Odie also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Beverly. They were known to take spur of the moment trips to Branson to catch a show or go to flea markets, resale shops and antiquing. Together they explored all the United States except for the northeastern states. They also ventured on cruises to Cozumel, Progreso, Costa Maya and The Cayman Islands. While at home, Odie liked watching Westerns and football on tv. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Odie enjoyed gardening, watching sunsets at the lake and sitting next to a campfire. He will be dearly missed by all his friends and family.
Odie was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Barnett, Sr. and Lena Barnett; his mother-in-law Jane Edens and father-in-law Leon Edens; three brothers: Earl Barnett, Virgil Barnett, Jr. and David Barnett, and six sisters: Ina Pickup, Betty Barnett, Louisa Kirk, Gladys Barnett, Virgie Barnett, and Cathi Rice.
