He is survived by his wife June, sister Trudie Mae Shockley of York, PA; daughters Judy Goodman and Gail Alexander of Tallahassee, son Bruce of Tampa; and stepson Mickey Ogle of Lexington, NC. He is also survived by his children’s spouses Marvin Dunn, Nancy Montgomery, and Rusty Alexander. Archie had 8 grandchildren of which he was most proud: Laura Mills of Tallahassee, Kathy Goodman of Atlanta, Adam & Christian Montgomery of Annapolis, MD, Grace Montgomery of Tallahassee, Molly Montgomery of Tampa, Rachel and Nathan Alexander of Tallahassee, and two step grandchildren, Logan Ogle of Tallahassee and Laura Ogle and son, Banks of Winston Salem.
An avid golfer and prolific reader, Archie was always willing to offer worldly advice on a variety of subjects. After growing up in Dugspur, VA, he went on to work for DuPont Chemical. He was drafted into the Army and the Korean War where he served our country as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Corps of Engineers. After returning to the US, he had an allergic reaction to penicillin and met his wife of 46 years, Sally Louise Bryan, a nurse at the hospital in which he was admitted. Archie worked for the Federal Highway Administration for over 30 years. While at the FHWA, Archie enjoyed his work on Tampa Bay’s Sunshine Skyway and Jacksonville’s Acosta and Dames Point Bridges, and countless other road projects. After retirement from the FHWA, he went on to work for the Florida DOT. On the golf course, he was known for putting with his original number 10 putter he had stuck with his entire life. On Saturdays throughout his working career, and on Monday’s in retirement, you could usually find him at the Hilaman or FSU golf courses. Archie was a member and Deacon of East Hill Baptist church since the early 1960s. He was always a great source of financial insight for his family and friends. His wife, children, grandchildren, in-laws and friends will miss his conversation, awesome leg of lamb, grape jelly, and fig preserves. The Montgomery family is extremely grateful for the care and support given by Westminster Oaks, Big Bend Hospice, and by Gwen Carriere, caregiver.
The family will receive friends from 5-7pm at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, on Thursday, May 12, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 at East Hill Baptist Church, 912 Miccosukee Road on Friday, May 13, 2016. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a donation to East Hill Baptist Church or Westminster Retirement Communities Foundation (W.R.C.F.).
