She was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, cherished grandmother, and a dear friend to many. She was the devoted and loving, much beloved wife of Richard McAvoy for 72 years.
Born on January 26, 1933, to William Melvin and Bessie Sapp Thomas, Betty lived a life full of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family. She was the heart of our home, always offering wisdom, warmth, and a comforting presence to those around her. She was an Advocate to the “underdog”, she was always for Justice and Compassion. She loved to travel and did so many times in Europe, Russia, Turkey, and Great Britain. She also loved dancing, walking, and a variety of music. She worked for the State government for almost 50 years, loving every moment, and was much loved by her coworkers. Her strength, generosity, and gentle spirit will forever be remembered.
She is survived by her husband, Richard, and their 4 children: Kendal, Michael, Barrie, and Neely, along with 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives with the same love and compassion she so effortlessly shared.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at 1:30pm at Roselawn Cemetery, where family and friends will gather to remember the beautiful life, she lived. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice in her honor.
Though she is no longer with us in person, her love and memory will remain in our hearts forever.
