He was born in 1943, at Camp Atterbury, Edinburgh, Indiana, and was the son of Charles J. Shoaf of Uniontown, PA, and Ruby Lois Herring of Tallahassee, FL. He grew up in Tallahassee and was a graduate of Leon High School and Tallahassee Community College.
Mr. Shoaf’s career encompassed employment as an Assistant to the Leon County Engineer, Henry Hanson, and Assistant to the Hillsborough County Engineer, Doug Trent. He was a partner in the surveying and engineering firm of Matthews, Shoaf and Associates, and owner of Accurate Engineering and Surveying. Mr. Shoaf ultimately retired from the City of Tallahassee, Public Works Department.
“Boompa” as his 11 grandchildren, family and friends lovingly called him, had a booming voice and a way of capturing the hearts of his grandchildren. He could often be found on the floor engaged in building train tracks with one child and playing Transformers minutes later with another. His tummy often served as a resting place for a tired baby or restless toddler. He enjoyed watching and cheering his granddaughters at their volleyball games over the years, and the same for his sons and grandsons at their baseball games. He always had words of praise and a few pointers to pass along to them. But, his sons never wanted to ride home with him after a bad game. Mr. Shoaf enjoyed sharing his love of saltwater fishing, crabbing and boating with his large family. Always full of great stories – the fish continued to grow with each telling. Although he struggled with health issues for almost 40 years, he was determined to make the best of each day. He was a hero to his family!
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Katherine Shoaf, his daughter Kristine Boyd (Rick Kennedy), his sons Bryan (Alisa) Shoaf, Mike (Meghan) Shoaf, and Step-son Jeff (Dolly) Erle; Grandchildren: Carson Shoaf, Kerstyn (TJ) West, Kyleigh Boyd, Daelynn Shoaf, Kamryn Boyd, Kinsley Boyd, Sawyer Shoaf, Reid Shoaf, Devan Erle (Kaneohe, HI), Kimberly and Karl Vega; his beloved sister, Juana Powell and nephew, Justin Powell. His former wife, Jean Gregory, the mother of Kristine and Bryan, remained a lifelong friend, and was a welcomed presence at many shared family celebrations.
