Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1958, Denise was one of ten children born to Mary Lou and John Thomas Doheny II. A fierce protector of her family and those she loved, Denise was a shining light in the lives of everyone who had the privilege to know her.
Raising two children as a single mother, Denise embodied grace and grit, guiding her kids with prayer, patience, and love. She taught them to be kind - to themselves and to others - encouraged them to chase their dreams, reminded them to always believe in their ability to overcome, and to always trust in God.
A proud FSU Seminole and self-described Indian princess in a former life, Denise earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Florida State University, devoting her career to caring for others with compassion, empathy, and tireless dedication. Although her career was tragically cut short due to a disabling medical incident, she relied on her faith in the Lord and remained a source of strength, encouragement, and love to all who knew her.
Denise is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth M. Keeton; son, Barry L. Drenkhahn II; and son-in-law, Craig M. Keeton - each of whom carries forward her strength, wit, and determination. She is also survived by her two cherished grandchildren, Addison and Parker, who were the joy of her life; her spoiled kitty - who, depending on the day, went by “Kitty,” “Cheeto,” or “Mufasa”; her grand pup, Lucy Dog, who will forever miss the endless buffet of treats at Grandma’s house; and her 62 thriving plants, all of whom are now wondering who is going to water them.
Also mourning her passing are her eight siblings and their partners: sisters Cathleen F. Doheny and Laura J. Doheny; brothers John T. Doheny III, Michael P. Doheny (Judy), David A. Doheny (Terri), Timothy J. Doheny, Dennis P. Doheny (Robert Christy), and Patrick S. Doheny (Deanna); and her 37 nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, who will carry on her spirit and love in each of their hearts.
Denise was preceded in death by her father, John T. Doheny II; mother, Mary Lou Doheny; brother, Kevin R. Doheny; and, most recently, her beloved four-legged companion, Tiger Lily.
A memorial service for Denise will be held on Friday, April 4, at 1 PM, at Goodwood Museum & Gardens in Tallahassee, Florida. A Celebration of Life will follow immediately at the Keeton residence.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Tallahassee Animal Shelter Foundation or WayFM’s Hope Media Group.
