A longtime resident of Tallahassee, Fla., George spent his final years in Atlanta at Dogwood Forest at Dunwoody. He was predeceased by his wife and lifelong love of more than 50 years, Mary Martindale Knight. They liked to say they had been married to each other two-thirds of their lives.
A journalist and businessman, George earned a PhD from Florida State University in Napoleonic history, and was fascinated with all things anthropological and archeological. Among other world travels, he and Mary biked through Europe together, practicing their very bad French and Spanish on the local residents.
He was born in Miami to Dewey Knight and Laura Frasuer Knight. He learned to sail from his father and a love of opera from his mother.
George leaves brother Frasuer Knight, sons George D. Knight Jr., Byron F. Knight, daughter Mary Laura Mohammad, daughter-in-law Mary Kennedy Knight, son-in-law Mohammad A. Mohammad, and grandchildren Karen, Tracy, George, Byron, Kate and Willa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Halcyon Hospice in Atlanta: The Halcyon Hospice Foundation, 1435 Haw Creek Circle, Suite 402, Cumming, GA 30041 or (678) 328-1700 or http://www.excellenceinhospice.com/hospice-nursing-services-about/halcyon-hospice-foundation/.
A memorial will be held Aug. 10, 2013, 10 a.m., at Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee.
