Gerald Bruno “Jerry” Gerardi passed away on Thursday night, October 10, after a lengthy illness. He had been battling heart and pulmonary disease for many years and fought the good fight.

Jerry was born in Hackensack, NJ on January 16, 1947 to the late Bruno and Elizabeth Leoncini Gerardi. The family moved to the Ft. Lauderdale area in the late 1950’s where Jerry grew up to love fishing the piers, bridges and beaches of south Florida.

He graduated from Pompano Beach HS and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. He retired from IBM in Boca in 1997 at which time he went from a technical writer to begin a long career as a fishing and outdoor writer. He wrote for the Palm Beach Post, Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel and the Boca Raton News. When retiring to Tallahassee in 2005, he began writing the outdoor column for the Democrat. He wrote his final column in the hospital on the Wednesday before he passed away.

Jerry married Mary Catherine Behrens in Tallahassee in 1970 and they lived in Boynton Beach until 2005. When it was time for Mary’s retirement, he agreed to move north as long as he could fish. He enjoyed fresh water fishing and making the trip to Panama City to fish the piers.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Mary and their sons, Joshua (Tonya) and Joe, both of Tallahassee. He is also survived by his sister, Jeanne Gerardi Crutcher (Terry) of Blairsville, GA; niece, Kristin Sterling Henry (Doug) of Minneapolis; grand-nephew, Max Sterling of Minneapolis; his two loving aunts, Jeanne Leoncini DiPietro of Dunnellon, FL and Bette Leoncici Sparrow of Pompano Beach, FL; and his brother, Tom Beach (Terie McComb) of Blairsville, GA.

Jerry was blessed with a wealth of friends. He enjoyed sharing his adopted Seminoles and opened his home to them during football season.

The family would like to thank the many doctors and health care providers who cared for Jerry over the months at TMH, Select Specialty and Encompass Rehabilitation. He commented just this week how kind everyone was to him. He too was a kind and gentle soul.

A Gathering of Family & Friends will be held on Friday, October 18 at 4:00 PM at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL. A Memorial Service will follow at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Diabetes Association, Kidz1stFund or the Saint Thomas More Co-Cathedral.

For years the Boynton Inlet was there
Your soul felt most at peace
Your heart was most content when there
With red snapper and out going tides
But then, your spirit came to rest
Where angels chose to roam
And once equipped with catch of the day
You made yourself at home

The sky became your deep blue sea
The clouds became your shore
And there, for all eternity
You sat with family & friends galore
Each angel was a fisherman
Who had traded his fishing pole
For golden wings and a game plan
At heaven’s fishing hole

The tales you told about each catch
Is legendary and it’s girth
And live in memories unmatched
As days pass here on earth
Until we meet again, One Day
Upon God’s golden shore
We’ll picture you no other way
Than with a pole in hand

Tight lines
Holding on
We cast our deepest heart
Into the deep deep blue
Carry on you often said
Pop Thank you
You moved me
Oh how we love you
Until we meet again
On Heaven’s golden shore

To all the Gerardi family, both immediate and extended, I wish to offer my heartfelt condolences.
I knew Jerry many, many years ago in South Florida, when I was dating his sister Jeanne in my two final years in high school. I had the pleasure and honor of being included in many Sunday dinners at the Gerardi home and have especially fond memories of that time so long ago.

I just wanted to express how much I enjoyed reading Jerry’s column every Fri. In the paper. He made me laugh many times with his sense of humor, relaying his opinions of those less savvy than he in boating/fishing. I will miss those columns very much. I am so sorry for your loss!! Thank you for sharing him with us.

I am so thankful that my wonderful Uncle was able to make it to my wedding and I was able to see him one last time. This is how I choose to remember him.

Dear, Mary, Josh and Joe,
When we reflect back to our time as neighbors, we remember all the hours David spent at your home, the hours at our house; at the ball field, take a kid fishing day. We remember Josh and Wendy sleeping outside in line for Paul McCartney tickets—Jerry and Marty spending the nights there with them. We are so saddened to know that Jerry is no longer with us. May your love, memories and faith sustain you at this time. Our prayers and love are with you all.

Dear Mary and Family,

I have many fond memories of Jerry growing up together in Hackensack and then in Fort Lauderdale/Pompano in the '50's and 60's. There was a rash of cousins born in 1947; I was one of them. I fondly remember the banter Jerry and George used to enjoy. One was devoted to fishing, the other to golf. They would tease each other that fishing was 'a jerk on one end waiting for a jerk on the other end!' and golf was 'hitting a little ball in a hole, picking it up, and hitting it in another hole!' Through the years I have told that story to many people.

Jerry was a kind, gentle soul and never changed. We used to exchange email jokes, but in recent years the emails stopped coming. I'm really sorry not to have had recent communication with him! I will miss thinking of Jerry fishing, writing and enjoying life with you, Mary, and your sons. You did good getting him to move to Tallahassee! ;)

I pray that the Lord will bring each of you Peace and Comfort in your great loss. May the memories of Jerry comfort you until you meet again.

With love and prayers,
Linda Rowe

A very dear friend over the past decade or so. It was always a joy and pleasure to swap fishing tales and memories of "Old" Florida, especially favorite fishing spots with Jerr-Bear as I fondly nicknamed him...it was definitely my honor to have been asked by him back in 2008 to contribute a weekly MyHometownfishing.com Apalachee Bay fishing report for inclusion in his weekly Outdoors column...even from his hospital bed he crafted one last column that as always was enjoyed by his loyal and devoted readership...
My thoughts and prayers go out to Mary, Joe and Josh...always cherish the memories made together!
And Jerr-Bear, just FISH!

Both of us spent a lot of time growing up on the Deerfield Beach pier fishing. It was pretty easy to become friends here in Tallahassee, always sharing a table at the monthly fishing club meetings. One day we hit the PC pier where I was taught a lesion in Spanish mackerel fishing. Only to be repeated when we fished St George later.
Great memories, Rest In Peace my friend!
