
Glee Ross Hollander was born on June 1st, 1943 in Spokane, Washington to Floyd Leroy and Gayle Amanda Ross. Glee died on Sunday, October 18th, 2015 in Tallahassee Memorial Hospital due to a sudden unexpected brain aneurysm that occurred the previous day. Glee's father was an original recycler, recycling grocery cartons and her mother was a nurse. Glee was one of five children and attended Shadle Park High School in Spokane. There she was a Shadle Park High Lassie, a dancing and high-stepping group that performed with the band. She was named the friendliest gal in the school four years in a row, a title she earned because she was cheerful to everyone. Glee's parents were poor and she had to work during high school, notably as a salesperson at W.T. Grant. When Glee graduated at age 18 in 1961 she traveled south to Palo Alto, California to begin the next phase of her life.
Initially in Palo Alto, Glee lived with her sister Naomi and Naomi's husband Ron, then got her own apartment. Glee quickly found a position as a Technical Typist in the Statistics Department at Stanford University, and later a position as an Administrative Assistant in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University. Glee met her future husband Myles Hollander in June 1962 when he was a graduate student in the Statistics Department. They were married at Stanford Memorial Church on August 17, 1963. Their first son Layne Q Hollander was born on October 29th, 1964 at the Stanford Medical Center.
On September 1st, 1965 Glee Arrived in Tallahassee with her husband and first-born son. On August 1, 1968 her second son Bart Q Hollander was born at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Glee then began taking classes at the Tallahassee Community College (TCC). She earned an AA degree at TCC in 1976, then a BA in Psychology at Florida State University in 1978.
Glee then began working as Research Assistant (later Research Associate) under Professor James Smith in Experimental Psychology. She worked in Professor Smith's lab and one of the their research projects involved taste aversion in cancer patients. Glee later decided to seek advanced degrees in Psychology and entered the Clinical Psychology Program. Her mentor for the MS (1987) and PhD (1990) degrees was Professor Jack Hokanson. In 1989, she did a pre-doctoral clinical internship at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Seattle. Her PhD thesis, written under Jack Hokanson, concerned a topic in depression. Glee co-authored papers with Hokanson and others on depression and papers with Smith, Alan Spector and others on taste aversion.
Glee's other professional activities included Instructor at FSU, Senior Psychologist-Coordinator, Psychogeriatric Unit at Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee (FSH), Senior Psychologist - Forensic Corrections FSH and therapist in private practice. She gave many community presentations on mental illness, depression, caring for an elderly parent, and Alzheimer's disease.
Glee also served as President of FSU's Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Chapter from 2003-2005, President of the Capital Chapter of the Florida Psychological Association in 2003, and Membership Vice President, TCC Alumni Association 2010-2012.
Glee gave credit to TCC for beginning her educational and professional path. She was recipient of a TCC distinguished Alumni Award in 2002 and was inducted into the TCC Alumni Hall of Fame in its Inaugural Class on February, 2004.
Glee lived life to the fullest. She loved traveling, dancing, jogging, cycling, movies and theatre. She loved to read novels and she was politically active. Glee was happiest in the company of her family and friends. Glee relished each day, was always positive, and loved giving joy to other people. She was selfless and always put the other person first. Glee was a beautiful person; she had outer and inner beauty, and was much loved. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and a great joy to her siblings and their children.
Glee is survived by her husband Myles, sons Layne and Bart, daughter-in-law Catherine Sanderson, brother Bob Ross, sisters Naomi Kimball, Gayle Higgins and Kayte Ross, and grandchildren Taylor, Connor, Andrew, Robert, and Caroline.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for Friday, October 30, 4:00pm in the Psychology Department Auditorium, 1107 West Call Street, Florida State University campus. A reception will follow in the Psychology Department Atrium, second floor of the Psychology Building.
