Born on March 27, 1923 in Chipley, Florida, she came to Tallahassee in 1941 and attended the Florida State College for Women (now FSU). She married James Coles Bannerman on December 31, 1941 and remained in Tallahassee while he was away during World War II (Seabees). She was homemaker and a talented seamstress, gardener, and painter; she also enjoyed ceramics and knitting. She learned to sew at the age of five, making all her dolls’ clothing – a talent she carried on throughout her life, making clothes for herself, her daughter, and others. She was an avid gardener and loved all kinds of flowers. She was active in the Garden Club of Tallahassee, and won many awards for her flower arrangements. She also was a member of the Women’s Club of Tallahassee and was granted an honorary lifetime membership from them. She always had a story to share and a joke to tell – she was honest, loving, and had a beautiful smile.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Coles, in 2000.
She is survived by one daughter, Frances Bannerman Yates (Bill) of Tallahassee, and her two grandsons: James Wesley Yates and family (Tallahassee), and William Brian Yates and family (Saratoga Springs, NY).
A graveside service will be held at Roselawn Cemetery on Sunday, October 2, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon with arrangements by Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home (Riggins Road) 850-877-8191. A reception for family and friends will be held following the service at Mrs. Bannerman’s residence in Tallahassee.
