

He was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Chevy Chase, MD. He attended St. John’s Military Academy, Georgetown University and graduated from Georgetown School of Medicine in 1965. He completed his residency and cardiology fellowship in Miami, Fl. From 1967-69, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army and was stationed at the Pentagon and Pleiku, Vietnam. He then practiced for 25 years as a cardiologist at Mease Clinic in Dunedin, FL, and then at the VA Outpatient Clinic in Tallahassee until his retirement to Maggie Valley, NC.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 50 years, Emily, his daughters, Kathleen Slay (Tom), Mary O’Brien, Susan Lee (Anthony), and his six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Hugh was admired for his quick wit, sharp mind and incomparable humor, as well as his unconditional faithfulness to the Washington Redskins.
His Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 14 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Tallahassee at 2pm. Private burial to follow reception. Donations may be made in his memory to Tallahassee’s Big Bend Hospice or St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Maggie Valley, NC.
