

Dr. James "Jim" Edward Hawkins, 64, former dean of the Florida A&M University School of Journalism and Graphic Communication, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2013, at the Coliseum Northside Hospital in Macon, Georgia.
He was born on May 25, 1949, in Newport News, Virginia, the son of the late Cecil and Iris Yancey. Jim spent his entire professional career at FAMU. In 1977, he came to FAMU as a member of the broadcast faculty. He then served as director of the Division of Journalism from 1984-2004, and finally as the school's second dean, serving from 2004 until his retirement in August 2012.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Iris Yancey; and by his sister, Iris Price.
He is survived by his wife, Judith; a son, Jason (Dionne); two granddaughters, Keira and Kyla; a brother, Dr. Eric Yancey (Constance); three sisters, Debra Hawkins, Lynette Yancey (Hayes) and Angela Lewis; nieces, Darcye Sorinmade and Mychal Ashburne; and nephews, William Price, III, Jonathan Price, Aaron Yancey, Justyn Little, Jordyn Lewis and Jaylen Lewis. He also leaves behind a large extended family and many special friends.
The viewing and memorial service will be held Monday, June 3, at FAMU's Lee Hall Auditorium. The viewing will be from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. The memorial service will follow and will begin at 11 a.m. The memorial service will be streamed online.
