James Michael Wheeler died in his home at age 54 on March 12, 2020. While he was born in Newton, Massachusetts, he spent most of his years in Tallahassee. Many of his friends knew him around town as “training wheels” or “Jimmy.”
To his family, James was a family man destined to be a father. When he turned 30, he was anxious that he did not have children yet. Shortly after, he found out he was having a little girl and could barely contain the excitement. James was a simple man and gave his life to raise his son and two daughters. “Daddy” taught his children what it meant to be goofy and not take life too seriously. We miss his cynical, sarcastic comments and playful banter. Each time his children would playfully make fun of him, he’d say ‘Go look in the mirror.’ He often said he could not ever deny his kids if asked by a court of law because we favored him too much. He did anything from fishing to road trips to beach trips . He was always brainstorming different “daddy-daughter dates” and activities to keep up with his kids. One of the things most important to James was family dinner every night, promptly at 6 PM. He was an amazing cook and treasured family talks at the dinner table. St. George Island was our family spot where we spent lots of quality time, where James’ ashes will be spread.
He was a Circle K manager in Tallahassee for over 30 years and had an impact on our community through his years with the company. James taught his children how to work hard for what you have and to stay humble, regardless of what you have been blessed with. He worked incredibly hard to provide for his wife of 21 years and children. James would have given the shirt off his back for anyone that was in need.
James is predeceased by his mother, Sheila Mulvaney Wheeler and his father, Robert Raymond Wheeler. He is survived by his children, Gabrielle Wheeler (23), Robert Wheeler (19), and Alyssa Wheeler (17) as well as his sister Colleen Wheeler. He is severely missed by so many.
