One of ten children, Mrs. Hancock was born on November 5, 1929 in Tuckerdale, North Carolina to William Garnie Dolinger and Blanche Cora Hodge. She married John C. Hancock on July 1, 1950.
Jean graduated from Avondale High School in Avondale, Pennsylvania and went right to work at various jobs until she married John. They had many adventures as they moved from city to city for John’s career, including Roanoke, Virginia, Bristol and Nashville, Tennessee, Coral Gables, Florida, Birmingham Alabama, Tampa, Florida, and finally Priceville, Alabama. During this time, she worked in early childhood education and then in retail services, including personnel and cashier positions with J.C. Penney Company.
In Priceville, she became a member of First United Methodist Church of Hartselle, Alabama, where she taught adult Sunday School and sang in the Heritage Choir. A “tough old bird” as she called herself, she managed to overcome several serious health challenges until the good lord finally called.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by sisters Wave I. Paisley, Ruth Marie Paisley, Levaun L. Dominick, Jessie L. Walker, and brothers Richard Daniel Dolinger, Bryan Walter Dolinger, and Earle B. Dolinger. She is survived by her husband, John, and her children and their spouses: Leslee Hancock and Bruce Henderson of Tallahassee; Eric and Julie Hancock of Jacksonville; grandson Jonathan Anderson; sister Mary Christie of Delaware; brother Raymond Dolinger of Atlanta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 2pm in the chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church - 120 W Park Ave, Tallahassee.
Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice House. The family would like to thank Tapestry Senior Living for their concern and care.
