Joan was born on February 19, 1930, to James E. and Ella Mae Hay in Erie, PA. After Joan graduated from Academy High School, Joan went on to study nursing at Hamot Hospital.
After graduating and becoming a registered nurse, she started her first job at Hays Manufacturing as an Industrial Nurse. It was there that she met Charles B. Hefren (deceased). Chuck and Joan married in April 1955. They moved to Fairview Park, Ohio where they raised their three children. In 1988, Joan retired and moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida where she was glad to be out of the cold. She thoroughly enjoyed living by the water. In 2003, she moved to Tallahassee, Florida, to be closer to her children.
Joan was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Jim (and his wife, Mary) and Bill, as well as her grandson, Christopher Hefren. She is survived by her children, Chuck (Cindy) of Tallahassee, Jim of Fort Myers, FL, and Judy of Ocala, FL. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Isabella Hefren of Tallahassee, FL, and her niece, Linda Imler (Dick) of Erie, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Big Bend Hospice (1723 Mahan Center Blvd. Tallahassee, FL 32308) or the Christopher D. Hefren Child Welfare Doctoral Scholarship. (c/o FSU Foundation 325 W College Ave Tallahassee, FL 32301 or online at give.fsu.edu/csw).
