

John was born in Dothan, Alabama, to John Shellie Barber, Sr. and Martha Louise Barber, on August 19, 1934. The family relocated to Tallahassee, where he attended Leon High School and met his future wife, Cherry Wynona Bradley, whom he married on May 25, 1954.
John served in the United States Marine Corps, serving 21 years active duty and 9 years fleet reserve, retiring with the rank of Captain. His tours of duty included Vietnam and Japan. He subsequently worked at Danley’s Carriage House, Haverty’s Furniture, and Leon County.
John was a man of strong Christian faith. He was kind and generous, and went out of his way to help those in need. He was a Lay Speaker with the United Methodist Church, and gave sermons at many of the churches in the region over the years.
John’s hobbies included playing the harmonica, writing poetry, woodworking, and collecting die-cast model cars. He also enjoyed painting ceramic figurines, often making gifts of them to others or by request. He had a strong sense of humor, and loved to laugh and make jokes.
John is predeceased by his parents, John Shellie Barber, Sr. and Martha Louise Barber; his wife, Cherry Wynona Barber; his son, Karl Kenneth Barber; his brother, Hansford Cornelius Barber; and his sister Jo Ann DuFault.
John is survived by his daughter, Martha Ruth Barber; his son, John Andrew Barber; three nephews, Rickie Barber, Ronnie Barber, and Alan Jarvis; as well as numerous cousins.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Culley’s MeadowWood, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312. Graveside service will follow at the same location at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that you make a donation to a charity of your choice.
