Judy was born to Harry and Elizabeth Pitman on December 31, 1951 in Buffalo, New York. The family relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1957. She graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1969 and then moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University, where she met her future husband, Charles. She majored in accounting and was actively involved in Delta Gamma Fraternity.
After graduation in 1974, Judy worked in the comptroller’s office for the state for several years before leaving to stay home with their two children, Katie and Charlie. When the children were older, Judy returned to FSU to earn her Master’s Degree in interior design, which she did in 1990. For many years, she was an adjunct professor for the interior design department at FSU, worked part-time with Mary Solomon Interiors and kept busy with her own design projects. While her love was design, her true passion was gardening. She was especially proud of her butterfly garden, and passed this love on to her grandsons, Colin and Campbell. For over 25 years she was an active member of the Mimosa Circle and served on the board of directors for the Tallahassee Garden Club. Judy most recently completed the Master Gardening certification through the UF/IFAS Leon County Extension office. She was actively involved in the community over the years by volunteering at her children’s schools and her family’s church. Judy was also a member of the Junior League of Tallahassee, The Tallahassee Ballet board of directors and a long-time advisor to Delta Gamma at FSU.
Judy was not only loved dearly by her family, but by her friends as well. She enjoyed traveling to New York, garden club and book club with friends from college, church and the garden club.
Judy is survived by her husband of 38 years, Charles Field, III; her children, Kathryn (Jason) Pernell, and Charles (Jessica) Field, IV; grandchildren Colin Pernell, Campbell Pernell, and Tallulah Field; her sister, Patricia Rivers, and brother, Peter (Carol) Pitman; brother-in-law, Scott (Charlotte) Field; father-in-law, Charles (Pat) Field; nephews, Jack (Sarah) Swart, Matthew (Danielle) Swart, Steven Swart, Andrew (Amy) Swart, Peter Pitman Jr., Brian Pitman, and Mitchell Field; and great nieces, Emily and Ali Swart and great nephew, Jake Swart. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Elizabeth Pitman and her mother-in-law, Mildred Mitchell Field.
A memorial service will be held at her family’s church, St. Paul’s United Methodist on Monday, December 1 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tallahassee Garden Club or Big Bend Hospice.
