Linda Elaine Steans, age 74, of Tallahassee, Florida passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2022. Linda was born June 27, 1947, in Spartanburg, South Carolina and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. She is preceded in death by her father, Bill Thomas; mother, Betty Thomas; and brother, Berry Thomas. She is survived by her husband, Bob Steans; her sister-in-law, Jane Thomas; brother-in-law Richard Steans and wife Karen; nieces, Caroline Thomas, Elizabeth Crocker and her spouse and child; nephews Jason and Ryan Steans and their spouses and children. She was also close to her many cousins, including Bob’s cousin, Kirk Anderson and family of Tallahassee.
Linda graduated from South Dade County High School and attended Miami Dade College. She began her career working for the Air Force at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida, eventually working at the Torrejon Air Base in Spain, and later the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. She transitioned for the rest of her career to the US Customs Service. In 1985, she moved to US Customs Headquarters in Washington, DC.
While living in Northern Virginia, Linda commuted to work in DC by commuter bus and subway. She met her future husband Bob while travelling on the bus. They married in 1990 and lived happily for the next twenty years in Alexandria, VA.
Linda retired in 2003 and became an avid quilter and member of Quilters Unlimited of Fairfax, VA. She also resumed her active participation with Order of Eastern Star and joined the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and Bob moved to Tallahassee in 2011 and resided in Killearn Estates. In 2020, they moved to Red Hills Village, an independent senior living community. She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church.
Linda enjoyed entertaining, cooking, sewing and creating unique projects for their home during her retirement. Soon after the move to Florida Linda joined Tallahassee Quilters Unlimited (TQU). She quilted weekly with Killearn United Methodist Church (KUMC) Quilters making quilts for babies and mothers at the local pregnancy centers. She was the founder of TQU Sit & Stitch ‘PinPals.’ Linda was an active member of KUMC participating in Bible and Contemporary Issues Sunday School and Saints Alive. She took part in many mission projects including English Language Learning for Migrants.
Her Celebration of Life will be held at Killearn UMC on June 11, 2022 at 10:30 am. A reception will follow. Interment will be at the Tallahassee National Cemetery with participation by the Order of Eastern Star. The date and time are to be announced later.
