

Madeline Garrett Smith, age 90, of Tallahassee, FL passed away at home on March 18, 2017 after a long and good life. She was born to the late Lula and Etheridge Garrett in Denton, GA on December 11, 1926, and moved with her family to Florida as a small child, graduating from high school in Everglades City. She was the first in her family to attend college, earning a scholarship to Florida State University, where she studied home economics, a subject she put to good use in her many years as a mother, homemaker, quilter, and community volunteer. In 1950, she married Richard M. Smith, a lawyer who was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Air Force soon thereafter. Together they raised a family and traveled the world, settling in Tallahassee in 1974, where she was especially active in the Killearn United Methodist Church and the Girl Scouts.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Richard M. Smith; her daughter, Rebecca M. Lewis; and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by her aunt Mary Emma Richardson of Seattle; four daughters, Katherine Adams of Cairo, GA, Elizabeth A. Zix (Jim) of Ft Wayne, IN, Virginia F. Smith (Jack Thornton) of Annapolis, MD, and Mary H. Smith of Roswell, GA; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She also had many devoted friends, extended family, and caregivers at St Augustine Plantation who will miss her dearly.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, March 21st at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, March 22nd at the Killearn United Methodist Church, 2800 Shamrock St. S., Tallahassee, FL with interment following at Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, the Florida Methodist Children's Home, or the animal welfare society of your choice.
