On Friday, November 18, 2022, God in his infinite wisdom, sent his Angel down and told his servant, Mary Betsey Gibson to come home. “You have fought the good fight, now it is time to take your eternal rest”. Mary Betsey, the fifth of nine children was born on July 3, 1947 in Quincy, Florida.
At an early age, Mary confessed her faith in Christ and accepted Him as her personal Savior. She subsequently became a member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Quincy where she served for many years.
Mary received her formal education in the Gadsden County Public School System and graduated from Carter-Parramore High School in the Class of 1966. After graduating from high school, she attended Florida A & M University.
In search of better employment opportunities, Mary moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and began a career with Sun Trust Bank where she worked diligently for more than 25 years until her retirement. Mary met and was joined in holy matrimony to the late Willie E. Gibson to whom she was wed for 30+ years. As a woman of faith, Mary joined Piney Grove First Baptist Church shortly after moving to Ft. Lauderdale, where she served faithfully as an usher and a member of the choir for many years until her health began to decline.
Mary had a quiet, easy-going spirit and a smile that would light up a room. Her gentle demeanor endeared her to family and others who she came in contact with. Although she never had any biological children of her own, she loved all of her nieces and nephews and took great pleasure in spoiling them and helping them to achieve their goals in life. She enjoyed baking and traveling with family members and friends. Throughout her adult life, Mary took great pride and joy in being a loving wife, sister, aunt, and godmother who was blessed with the gift of caring, sharing, and giving unconditionally. She will always be remembered fondly in our hearts until we meet again.
Mary leaves to cherish her love and legacy: four sisters, Janey Dupont-Butler, Quincy, FL, Pauline B. Adams, Stafford, TX, Christine B. Wilcox (Bobby), Orlando, FL, Juanita B. Ellis (Willie), Tallahassee, FL, Gladys B. Harrison, Quincy, FL; one brother, John Betsey (Sara), Tallahassee, FL; aunt, Mary K. Roberts, Quincy, FL; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other sorrowing relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Willie E. Gibson; mother, Christell Betsey; sister, Ruthie B. Coachman; and one brother, Willie Betsey, Jr.
Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 26, 2022 in the chapel at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL. Viewing is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Culley’s.
