Peyton Truman Jackson, 83, of Tallahassee passed away after a sudden illness on Thursday (8/23) at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. Born December 6, 1934 in Dickey, GA, he grew up in Morgan GA. He attended North Georgia College, Georgia Southwestern and Georgia State University. He served in the US Army in the 50’s and attended Mountain Training Center in Austria and was on ski patrol in Salisbury Austria and Germany. He had a career in insurance including Territorial Sales Manager for several insurance companies. He came to Tallahassee in 1987 from Jacksonville FL when his territory was expanded.
Peyton was an American Patriot and felt the national anthem should be sung straight forward with gusto and without extra notes. He was a kind man who quickly intrigued you in conversation and storytelling. Stories of growing up in rural Georgia, his visits to New York City to visit his brother and sister on Broadway, his military days in Austria, leaving you wanting to hear more. A true southern gentleman who enjoyed gardening, singing, golf and attending FSU Music Concerts. His four cats, who rule the house, will miss his daily affection. For the annual neighborhood driveway Halloween party, he dressed as Dracula to scare the kids as he lovingly gave out the candy. Friday's he met his old cronies for lunch and laughs. One of his many talents was the ability to "hoot" like an owl, often an owl would answer. A friend said that he was just as wise. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan, but pulled for the Seminoles too. Peyton was a Past President of the Killearn United Methodist Church Singles Class.
He was the son of Eunice Bussey and George Gilbert Jackson and the youngest of 8 children. With 6 older sisters he said he had 7 mothers.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Ouida Clements, Janice Shippey; Doris Murback Doherty; Helen Bostwick; Mariwood Taylor Harden; and brother: Charles Wade Jackson.
Survivors include a daughter: Jennifer (Craig) Hertel of Daleville, MS; sister: Lois Colvin of Sandy Springs, GA; grandchildren: Josh, Molly, Jacob, Jared and Joseph Hertel and Significant Other-- Ann W. Parramore.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at Tallahassee National Cemetery on October 12th at 10 AM. Peyton was a contributor to Children International since 1982, and made a difference in many children's lives. Contributions in his memory may be sent to P.O. Box 219055, Kansas City MO 64121.
