Sarah (Culpepper) Snow, resident at Sim's State Veteran's Nursing Home in Panama City, FL passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2012.
A former Navy Wave during trhe "Forgotten War" (Korean War), Sarah's story is one of true strength and purpose. Back in 1955 girls were not encouraged to have careers let alone receive furthur education. Although the "fifties" were the best in many ways, girls still obeyed their parents and did not question their decisions. Sarah, a history buff, (her family the Culpepper's date back to 1300's in England, dreamed of being a CIA Agent. Her father said NO to college or further education because she was a girl.
During her senior year at Marianna, FL, High School, Sarah was recruited in the Navy; being legal age she just signed up . This began a wonderful experience in photo work in the Navy. Sarah trained in Pensacola Naval Base (prettiest naval school we have). She received instruction at the Aviation Fundamentals School in Jacksonville, FL, producing recruting films, making maps with fly overs, and training films for the Marine Corps. After three years in the Navy, Sarah fell in love and married a "sailor". You had to leave the service when you married at that time. Sarah explained the Navy Wave dress - Winter blues and Summer whites (sometimes you could wear slacks). Her son carried on the Naval tradition as a Submarine sailor out of Tampa.
I know you will agree with me when I named Sarah "The Poster Pin-Up of Sims." Pioneers like Sarah paved the way for women in the military.
Survivors include a daughter, Melissa Tejada of Tallahassee; son, Jim Snow of Greensboro, FL; granddaughters, Anna Snow of Homosassa Springs, FL, Aisha Snow, Leila Tejada and Amy Snow of Tallahassee, FL; grandson, John Snow of Panama City, FL; great grandchildren, Khalid Snow, Knya Rosier, Zinnia Snow, Gabe Cromartie and Nathaniel Cromartie all of Tallahassee; cousin, Kathy VanLandingham of Tallahassee; and many family, friends and loved ones.
She was the life of The party and will be greatly missed!
