Stanley Lynn Shore passed away on May 24, 2023, ready to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Stan was born on October 3, 1934, in Oxford, Kansas, as the oldest son of Buster Delos Shore and Theresa Viola Moffet. He and his younger brother Alan grew up on the farm, learning the value of hard work, chores, exploration, and fun. In the summer of 1955, he met Virginia Ann Gatlin at church and took her to the state fair on their first date, telling her that very night that he would marry her someday. She just laughed. They were married in Wichita on September 2, 1956, and had 66 wonderful years together.
Stan graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in accounting and worked as an accountant at Steffan’s Dairy in Wichita for 41 years. Virginia attended Friends University for two years before becoming a mom and homemaker with the birth of their son Mark Stan in January 1959, followed by Mary Michelle in November 1960. Virginia returned to work the year Michelle graduated from high school, serving as a bookkeeper and credit union manager.
Stan always put God first, accepting the Lord at age 10, and his family was a close second. They were active in College Hill Baptist, Woodlawn Baptist then Oxford Baptist churches. Stan was often the music leader and frequently asked to sing for church and all kinds of special occasions. He handed out Gideon Bibles for decades to share the Lord’s word. He was a devoted father engaged in everything his children were involved in, from scouting and many Boy and Girl Scout trips to Mark’s baseball games and Michelle’s piano and violin concerts. In 1978 they built a new home on the Oxford farm homestead, then moved into the town of Oxford in 1993. Finally, as retirees, they moved to Tallahassee, FL, in 2013 to live near their daughter Michelle Bono. They resided at Westminster Oaks, worshiped at Celebration Baptist Church, and were involved with family and friends.
Family time often included Dominos, Bridge, Hand and Foot, and even Charades games. Stan was known for his boisterous laugh, big, deep hugs, and long dinner-time prayers. He loved his wife and family unconditionally. He died at 88, with his last words telling Virginia he loved her before he headed home to be with the Lord. Stan is survived by his wife Virginia, brother Alan (Gay) of Colorado, son Mark (Cathy) of New Hampshire, daughter Michelle (Richard) of Tallahassee, and grandchildren Jennea from Arizona, and Nick (Jessica), Jessie (Sean), and Kristi Bono of Tallahassee; and the Shore grandchildren -- Jamie (Rebekah) of Boston, Logan of South Carolina, and Jordan of New Hampshire, along with many cousins, nephews, family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at Westminster Oaks. See the details and directions below.
Remembrance donations can be made to Gideon’s International (www.gideons.org/donate), Celebration Baptist Church of Tallahassee, or First Baptist Church of Oxford. In addition, thoughts of remembrance can be sent to Virginia Shore, 4449 Meandering Way, #312, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
