He was a graduate of the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt (now the Technische Universität Darmstadt) having studied electrical engineering. After working for a few years in Germany with the Siemens Corporation he was sent to Pakistan in 1956 as a telephone engineer in support of a major Siemens project to rebuild the Pakistani telephone networks. There he met his future wife Wynell Jordan who was serving in Pakistan as a Methodist missionary from Alabama. They married in Karachi in August 1958 and later moved to northern Pakistan where they had two sons, Marc and Walter, both born in Lahore. They departed Pakistan in December 1960 and moved to Tallahassee where their third child, Monica, was born in 1962.
Monica preceded him in death in 2010, and Wynell in 2018.
The Sachs family were charter members of Calvary United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, and he has been a member at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in recent years. He served for 30 years as a Scoutmaster, won the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in 1981, and had 10 Eagle Scouts under his leadership. Following his retirement from Centel/Sprint in 1993 he worked for another ten years with the Florida Department of Transportation. For the past twenty years he volunteered with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and most recently at the Florida Historic Capitol Museum. He was also an active member of the Tallahassee Northside Kiwanis Club for many years.
He is survived by his sons, Marc (Diane) and Walter (Claudia); his two granddaughters, Elise (Noel) and Kelly (Vince); and his great grandchildren, Jamie, Penelope, Korra, Vivian, Owen, Tony, and Katherine.
He enjoyed traveling and has been all over Europe, the Middle East, and Asia visiting 35 different countries.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, but we know he is in a good place, now reunited with Wynell and Monica. A celebration of his life will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (Sanders Hall), 1700 North Meridian Road, Tallahassee, FL 32303.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tallahassee Northside Kiwanis Club at 2337 Hampshire Way, Tallahassee, FL 32309.
