

The youngest son of Josefina Soto and Manuel Contreras, Bernardo was born on December 6, 1923 in San Jose, Costa Rica. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in Civil Engineering and worked in Venezuela for several years afterwards. He met the love of his life, Yolanda Escalante in San Jose, Costa Rica and they married in 1955. They started a family and in 1960 they moved to Chicago, Illinois for a better opportunities. In 1963 they moved to Miami, Florida and in 1965 they moved their growing family to Ft Lauderdale, Florida. As a structural engineer, Bernardo took great pride in working on many of the interstate highway projects in South Florida as well as on many suburban housing developments.
Bernardo passed away peacefully at home in Tamarac, Florida, with his entire family at his bedside on the morning of October 1, 2014. A devoted and loving husband and father, he is survived by his loving wife Yolanda and his three children, Bernie Jr., Maurice and Christianne, their spouses and his two grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 PM on Friday, October 24 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church in Coral Springs, Florida.
