In the year 1965, during the third week of November, I was invited by my friend and US Air Force colleague Alton Gaston, to dinner at his apartment in Panama City, Panama. There I met Dalys Perez, a friend of Al's wife, who graciously paid my taxi fare as the driver had no change. We had a great dinner and evening and agreed to meet again. We did indeed meet again and several times after that.

During the third week of December I went to Dalys's mother’s apartment. There in the presence of Dalys's family, I formally asked Lucia Guerra, Dalys's mother, for Dalys's hand in marriage. I told her I loved her daughter, respected her and I would always care for her. The response was a "Yes" and was accompanied by a tray of champagne flutes for a toast.

On December 24, 1965, thirty days after meeting Dalys Perez, we were married by the local magistrate in her mother’s apartment. Alton was my 'best man' and another tray of champagne flutes appeared for another toast.

Dalys and I have had a wonderful, adventurous and fulfilling life. We have raised three children, welcomed ten grandchildren and numerous Irish Setters. It has been a great life and I can truthfully say that "Love at First sight" can and did happen.

My Abuela was the sweetest most funny person of my childhood. She loved her family very much, and life won’t be the same without her. My favorite stuffed animal was a stuffed puppy she gave me. I’ll never forget you Weewa. Te Quiero Mucho. ❤

Mom, I will always be grateful to you for accepting me into your wonderful family. I will always cherish the memories of us watching baseball games (Yankees and Red Sox) and playing card games especially continental. You are the continental queen, until we meet again in heaven and play cards again. I miss you and you will forever be my second mom.

Scott, Willie, and entire Benninghoff family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Know that although your Mom may be gone, she's never forgotten.

I remember she was always at our Fastlich baseball games (Go Macaws) rooting on all of us. Such a fun and full of life lady, who loved her sons with all her heart.

God bless her and keep her until you meet up with her again.

Un abrazo,

El Buitre

With deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to your family on the loss of your sweet moma. “What is lovely never dies, but passes into other loveliness “ (Thomas Bailey Aldrich).
Mrs. Benninghoff was a wonderful person and kind neighbor. May you find comfort in beautiful memories . Did you know that your gentle moma pierced my ears and my sister Donnie ‘s ears too?
