Bette was born August 24, 1914 in Odessa, Florida. After she graduated from high school in 1933, she went on to Business College and worked until her marriage to Conrad Haug on January 30, 1938. They were married in Zion Lutheran Church in Tampa, FL and Bette was confirmed a year later on April 30, 1939. Their first child, Margaret, was born on May 1, 1941 and Conrad, Jr. was born on September 4, 1942. In September of 1947 the family moved from their home in Tampa to Sacramento, California. While in Sacramento, they joined Trinity Lutheran Church where Bette was active in the LWML and the children attended parochial school. Walter was born in California on March 17, 1950. On October 22, 1961, Conrad Sr. died at the age of 52. Bette and the children then returned to Tampa, where she worked until her retirement in December of 1980. Once her children were grown, Bette traveled and took cruises with friends and family. In June of 1990 she moved to Colorado, where two of her children were living and where she had visited many times throughout the years. Bette moved to Springwood Retirement Center in Arvada and once again found love. She met Richard Powell, the man next door, and they were married February 16, 1991. After Richard died on January 4, 2002, Bette moved to San Marino Retirement Center in Westminster to be closer to where her children lived. This narrative was mostly written by Bette at the age of 94. She closes by stating that “at this time of my life, I am ready for whatever God had in store for me. He has always taken care of me and I know that he always will.”
