Joanne Elizabeth Blackburn, 88, died peacefully on 17 August 2014. She was born in Brooksville, Florida to Henry and Eunice Geesink on 14 April 1926. She began her education in Hernando County and often spoke fondly of growing up there. When her family (including her older sister Marguerite and younger sister Bess) moved to Tampa in 1941, she attended Hillsborough High School, graduating in 1944. When she married Wallace Blackburn in 1947, they started a 67 year journey together. After bearing two daughters, she later returned to work outside the home. Her last job, which she enjoyed greatly, was with the Hillsborough County Mosquito and Aquatic Weed Control office. During her retirement she was a regular at the South Tampa YMCA and an active member of Palma Ceia Christian Church and later New Beginnings Christian Church. She is survived by her husband Wally, daughters Marlana Blackburn of Seattle and Marsha Johnson (Mel) of Orlando, two grandchildren, a great grandson and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She also leaves behind a host of dear and supportive friends.
There will be a celebration of her life on 30 August 2014 at New Beginnings Christian Church, 4100 S Manhattan Ave, Tampa, FL 33611 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to LifePath Hospice, 3010 W Azeele St, Tampa, FL 33609, (813) 877-2200. Arrangements under the direction of Blount & Curry FH-Carrollwood, TAMPA, FL.
