John served as a NYPD Officer/Detective for twenty years. He found a new home as a Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Deputy for fifteen more years before retiring. That was only the beginning of his adventure. He was also an avid motor cycler, a pilot, a boater, a passionate car builder and a lover of antique cars. The original handy man, John was able to fix just about anything, usually with the help of a little duct tape.
With all John accomplished in his seventy-five years, his family was his true joy and greatest pride. He could always be counted on to lend a hand to his children and grandchildren. He was often found hanging out with his son and tinkering with cars in the driveway, and as Peepaw he was larger than life. He loved dancing to the oldies, playing imaginary musical instruments, car shows and getting together for the Matera’s large family gatherings. He will be missed more than we can express.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Aniello & Carolyn Matera, his Brother Ralph Matera, and his sister Ann O’Connell. He is survived by his sisters, Lucille Mclaughlin & Frances Meehan, ex-wife of 42 years, Jennie Matera, daughter Carolyn Lee Matera, son John Thomas Matera Jr. & wife Karen , Grandchildren, Paul Douglas Shelby Jr. , Jennie Lee Shelby, John Thomas Matera III, Kelly Nicole Matera, and Great grandchildren John & Carolyn Clemente.
