Shaun was born in Olean, New York to Edward and Alice Darragh on April 1, 1945. As a young boy, he moved to Lowell, MA where his family lived for many years. He had four siblings; Edward, Shealagh, Hank, and Gregory. Shaun had a happy and event-filled childhood, as the 1950s and 1960s were an age when kids were free to roam.
Shaun attended St. Margaret's Grammar School and Lowell High School where he graduated in 1962. During his final two years at Lowell High, Shaun became very interested in the Army's Special Forces. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted at age 17 into the United States Army.
His first assignment was to an Air Defense (Nike- Hercules) Battery in Caribou, Maine. Shaun couldn't wait to turn 19 so he could join the Special Forces. He took the test, was successful and was accepted to Special Forces Training. That was the beginning of a long and successful career in Special Operations and the military.
Shaun's assignments took him to Vietnam, Ft. Bliss, Texas, Ft. Hood, Texas, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, Ft. Clayton, Panama, Puerto Rico, and South Korea. During his distinguished career, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Special Forces Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, French Parachutist Badge, Vietnamese Parachutist Badge and many other service medals.
Shaun was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He always enjoyed a good glass of wine with his Army buddies and talking about military history. Once Shaun retired, he spent his free time traveling, writing, working in his yard and exercising. But what he enjoyed most was writing. He was a published author of two books on the Vietnam War and was working on his third publication when he became ill.
He is survived by his loving wife Kim Hoang (almost 40 years), his brother Edward and sister Shealagh, his son Sean; his stepchildren, Larry Scarborough and Connie Scarborough; grandsons Pierce Darragh and Logan Scarborough and granddaughter Madison Scarborough, nephews Ryan and Evan, and niece Alicia.
