Melton Douglas Herndon

Melton Douglas Herndon, age 80, of Tampa, Florida went peacefully on Sunday, May 9, 2021. Melton was born September 27, 1940 in Tampa, FL. where he was a life long resident. He left behind his loving wife, Jacqueline P Herndon. He was a father to six children, Douglas M. Jernigan, Steven G Whidden, Michelle R, DelGado(Anthony), Derek E Herndon (Matt), Debra A Gillette and Ronald J Gillette (Lisa). Mel had many grandchildren, Allan Douglas Jernigan Herndon(Megan), Joylynn Renee Thompson, Devin A Powers, Cassidy R Gillette and Kylie E Gillette. And one great grandson, Douglas Gage Herndon. He is survived by his brother, Max Herndon.

Mel graduated from Hillsborough High School and after graduation worked as an operating engineer for the local union. Mel had an adventurous life and one of his favorite things to do was to tell the stories of his adventures. Mel was a joksters and was usually the center of attention whenever he went making everybody laugh. He was a great card player and excellent at trivia especially trivia about about old movies & music. He enjoyed watching football especially the Florida Gators and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was also known to make an occasional wager on football games. I guess to sum up Mel, he was just a fun loving guy with a giant heart. He was a great husband, father and friend. He will be missed dearly by all his family and friends.

A visitation for Melton will be held Sunday, May 23, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 4207 E Lake Ave, Tampa, Florida 33610, followed by a funeral service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and reception.
