Cousin Mildred will be remembered for her winning smile, her warmth and generosity, and her beautiful family. It was a joy to see Mildred and Joe with daughters Anne Marie, Laura and Janet in tow at our infamous family picnics and other Cory/Alchediak family events.
Much love to Anne Marie, Laura, Janet and all who loved her so.

Aunt Mildred was known and loved by many, and she will be greatly missed. I enjoyed our visits over the years and am grateful I had a chance to see her the day before she left us for Heaven, where a very large gathering of family and friends were there to greet her. My condolences to my cousins Anne Marie, Laura and Janet, all my aunts and uncles and other relatives and friends of Aunt Mildred.

So sorry for your loss. Peace, hugs, and prayers for comfort to all of you.

We have known Mildred since Peter and Joe worked together at WFLA-TV back in the 1950's.
She has always been a quiet, steady, person and admired by both of us.

Mom (Mildred Girolami) passed away Friday morning, June 20, 2014. She passed away in a way that she always envisionedâ€¦ quietly, peacefully, and in her sleep. 

There's not much else to tell you about how she died, but there is one thing I'd like to share with you about how she lived. 

Mom has always been a wonderfully independent woman and in control of her life. She was much more comfortable doing things for others than having others do for her. 

As she was going through this last chapter of her life, Mom's mind was still sharp, but her body was weakeningâ€”and it was hard for her to adjust to her failing physical condition. If it wasn't for particular CRNsâ€”and close friends and family membersâ€”she would have had a truly miserable time at rehab. 

Daily, Mom would instruct me to pick up thank you cards, write something very nice in them, and send them off to various CRNs who had gone out of their way to make her stay at the rehab palatable (much more palatable than her meals there).

She'd send me out one day to pick up cards for two people. Once I'd get those written and out in the mail, she'd send me out for two more. And once I'd get those out, she'd come up with two more names.â€¦ 

We'd go through this ritual every day. When she asked me to pick upâ€¦ what turned out to be the last cardâ€¦ she asked me if I thought she was being silly. Was she going overboard with these cards?

I didn't think so. I believe that everything is connected, everything happens for a reason, and we are exactly where we need to be at every given moment. 

What if Mom's reason for being at this rehab â€” at this particular time in her life â€” was to meet these young people, interact with them, listen to their stories, and show them how much their work is appreciated? 

Noâ€¦ I didn't think she was being silly or overboard. With that, we continued what had become our daily ritual.

The day Mom died, I received a thank you card from one of the recipients of â€œthoseâ€ thank you cards. 

In the card, the CRN shared that she enjoyed her time with Mom and how sweet Mom was. She enjoyed talking with Mom and sharing lifetime memories with her. 

She added that she was a CRN for 3 years and never received a card like the one we sent her. She was having a particular rough week and was actually wondering how she was going to make it through this week of nursing school. She was praying and praying that she'd pass the final exams.

Then, she received our â€œthank youâ€ card in the mail, and it encouraged her to get through the week. She thanked us for our kindness and our appreciation. She saw it as God's way of telling her that she was in the right profession. That simple note of appreciation came at such the perfect time for her. It really meant so much to her.

Her note ended by saying that she was so glad she met Mom and got to spend hours with her talking to her. She saw a strong woman under the physical weakness and admired the woman she got to know. She couldn't thank Mom and me enough. 

Soâ€¦ what does this all mean?

Nothing â€¦ and everythingâ€¦

Everything is connected, everything happens for a reason, and we are exactly where we need to be at every given moment. We need to see each day as a giftâ€¦ and as an opportunity to share ourselves with others and make a difference in other people's lives. We need to let go of the things we have no control over, so we can focus on the things we can do, to make a difference.

It doesn't matter how young or old we areâ€¦ or how strong or how weak we are. 

The point is WE ARE. That's all we need to be to make the difference. 

Mom made a difference to so manyâ€¦ and in so many ways.

She shared her life with so manyâ€¦ even more than she realized. 

And she did this to the very end of her lifeâ€¦ and beyondâ€¦.
