When I first came to the US, I came to Newark as a 4-year-old. Newark was not a happy place for an immigrant child from India, but we had cousins that lived in NC. Every Summer, we made the annual pilgrimage to Chapel Hill, NC and stayed with our cousins for perhaps 2 weeks at a time. 
These visits were among my favorite childhood memories. From playing fetch with a German Shepard named "Wolf" to playing hide and seek with my cousins (and a cat named "Ludwig") to playing in the neighborhood with a I kid I called "Tennis" (who called me "Bucktooth") to swimming in the pool, playing board games, engaging in thought provoking conversations and of course, eating some of the best food ever -I enjoyed my visits immensely. Those were happy times full of wonder, warmth & discovery.
At the center of these memories was Gulnar Auntie, my mom's older sister. Auntie made all this possible. She was the organizer and the glue that held us all together. To this day, I have never known anyone who showed more hospitality and warmth than Auntie. She truly treated me as if I was her own son. She loved me and I loved her. I will miss her dearly. 
My mom was very close with her older sister. Nearly every time I visited my mom in Marion, she would have a phone call with "Gulnar Appa". Whenever these phone calls took place, Auntie would always ask to speak with me and invite me to stay with her in Tampa. She always reached out to me -even when I was in my 40s & 50s. Auntie's warmth was always genuine and enduring. 
I have lost someone I loved for essentially all my life. The world is diminished with her passing but the impact she had on so many lives will endure.  May she rest in Peace.

Dear Nani, 

I miss you so much. I reflect on your constant presence in my life, from the day I was born to our last moments together. Through it all, through the disease that took your memories away, you still sought to comfort everyone around you. I reflect on the choices that were made for you, the sacrifices you had to make, and in spite of it all you were a beacon of light for your family. You gave the freedom of choice to my mother, and she nurtured the same freedom for me. 

I am able to live how I choose because of you. If I have children one day, they will know your legacy. They will hear stories of the young woman who crossed an ocean with four children, the mother who planted roots in a foreign country, and the grandmother who loved me unconditionally. 

I hope I can grow into a person you can be proud of. I know you will always be with me.

Dear Mom,
You welcomed me into this extraordinary family with open arms and a warm heart. Your kindness shone through always, you never missed an opportunity to make a call, send a card, or remember a birthday. You made each event special with a sweet and precious comment that renewed our connection, no matter how far away we were at the time. 

I will never forget your keen observations of the world, your efforts to teach me a bit of Urdu, and your love of life. We had so many wonderful experiences with you. When we were in Upper Egypt visiting the Pharonic sites, for some reason the authorities wanted to know what country we were from, you said India, the guard then looked at Uzra and said “India!” and then he looked my way a bit quizzically. Mom you immediately piped up for me and said “Kashmir!”  We laughed about this for days!  So in some parts of the world, I’m Tom the Kashmiri thanks to you!

You brought so much joy into our lives Mom. Your unending love of our children and desire to be with them no matter where we went was an example for all of us. Both Kira and Lexi have such deep, warm and lovely memories of their Nani and their excitement was reflected in their joy when you embraced them as they squealed with delight “Nani!!!”

Mom you were always so kind and gentle and treated me like a son and, when my Mother passed away, you became my Mother.  I was so grateful for you! I miss you so much Mother and may God grant you eternal rest and may perpetual light shine upon you!

I will miss my wonderful Nani forever and always. From as early as I can remember, she was always there for me and gave me so much love. She always visited me whenever I moved to a new place, but she was also there for me in small ways, like always calling on my birthday! I'll always be grateful for all the comfort and warmth she gave me. It's so hard now that she's gone, but whenever I think about her, I feel a little bit of her love in my heart. 

I love you, Nani! 

It’s really sad to see Nani go . I have met her twice  in my life but in the little time that I spent with her she has left me with memories that will last forever . May Allah SWT grant her Jannah make her grave and an abode of peace and tranquillity. May Allah SWT give patience to the family to deal with this great loss .

To my dear friend and sister, Gazelle, I just read the sad notification of your beautiful mom’s passing. I know your heart is heavy as you face this tremendous loss. My thoughts are with you and your family as you lay her to rest. The obituary and tributes painted a vivid picture of a strong, loving, generous and brilliant woman. I see where you, your sisters, and brother were nurtured to become the likewise strong, compassionate and brilliant people that are her legacy. Mom’s light and love is eternal. I wish you peace and comfort in the difficult days ahead. I am sending our love and condolences to you and your family. 

My dearest, beloved mom and best friend. You were and will always continue to be an inspiration to me. I am so grateful to have had you as such an incredible example of love, kindness, honesty, and strength. You overcame a lot of challenges in life but you faced them head on with incredible strength, determination and courage. I am forever grateful for your unconditional love and support, and the precious time we spent together.

Remembering Gulnar Aapa means a trip down memory lane. She is no more but her image will linger in our mind. Such a fabulous and confident woman, with lots of love and grace,... we are going to miss you Aapa. Since my childhood in Bettiah till my last visit to USA, there are thousands of loving moments to be treasured. May you rest in peace and Allah give strength to the family to bear this great loss. Ameen.

Sending love and healing wishes to the entire Zeya family. There is a spot in my heart (for nearly 50 years), filled with special memories of going to the Zeya house and doing all sorts of fun and creative activities. Most especially the warm greeting I would always receive from Mrs. Zeya with each visit. One Summer they added 2 friends of Gazelle & Rena's to a beach camping trip. (Andrea & myself) As par for the course, Mrs. Zeya had wonderful Indian cuisine prepared for our dinners. May all of the good memories fill your hearts to overflowing!
