Ruth was 18 when she met her husband Miguel Nunes while he was stationed in Illinois serving in the United States Air Force. It was not long before Miguel proposed; they tied the knot on July 4, 1952, and their journey began. Miguel and Ruth were blessed to have just celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary this past July.
They raised six children together: Bruce, Tom, Theresa, Steve, Mark, and Sam. Ruth and Miguel’s life together was an adventure with the Air Force taking the family to several different duty stations here in America, and abroad. While stateside, the family would travel via two VW busses and spent time camping, going to the beach and fishing. Miguel and Ruth were able to finally buy a home and put down roots in the Town and Country area which is where they have lived since 1972.
Family was always close to Ruth’s heart. She was a devout wife and mother, who provided much love and plenty of food for her husband and children, as she delighted in cooking and preparing large meals. Ruth also took up sewing, and became a talented seamstress, which came in handy clothing six children with a husband in the military.
Besides cooking and sewing, you would not ever find a book too far from Ruth. Ruth enjoyed frequenting the library, and was a part of a few different book swap groups throughout the years. Apart from taking care of a household, Ruth also worked at the PX on base, and even volunteered with the Red Cross at Town and Country Hospital. Her volunteer work at the hospital eventually led to a job working in the pharmacy. Between taking care of a household, working and volunteering, just like a proper lady of her time, she still managed to get into the beauty salon once a week.
For some fun, Ruth liked going with her husband out to the theater to watch the latest movie. Ruth and her husband Miguel, later in life, delighted in taking many a trip together. Ruth’s most treasured trips with her husband were the times they were able to visit Hawaii together.
It is difficult to sum up 91 years of life about someone who had so many experiences, accomplishments, and who meant so much to so many, but her life was nothing but remarkable. She was a graceful, kind, dedicated, loving and devoted wife, mother, aunt, cousin and grandmother.
She is preceded in death by her children: Tom Nunes, Steve Nunes and Theresa Nunes.
Ruth is survived by her adoring and devoted husband, Miguel Nunes and her impact and legacy will continue to live on in her surviving children: Bruce (Kathy) Nunes, Mark (Tammy) Nunes, and Sam (Sandy) Nunes, and her daughter-in-law Helga Nunes along with her 13 grandchildren, and her 19 great grandchildren.
