Susan was born in New York City to Robert McEwan and Virginia Kaiser McEwan on March 14, 1942. After moving to a couple of different states as a young girl, the family moved to Stephentown in Upstate New York. At the age of 11, she fell ill while on a family vacation and was later diagnosed with polio. After receiving rehabilitation while in New York the family decided to move to Rome, Georgia where she could get better treatment. She thrived in school there and was chosen as Valedictorian at West Rome High.
She then joined the founding class at Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College) in St. Petersburg and graduated with Honors in 1964. She went on to Emory University's Library School in Atlanta, Georgia. Following library school she accepted a job as a Cataloger at the University of South Florida Tampa Campus Library where she worked for 40 years and met the love of her life!
She was active in her community, volunteering to be Den Mother for her son's Cub Scout pack as well as being a member of the Clarion Society at USF and holding different positions as a member of the USF Women's Club. As an advocate for the ADA, she was part of the committee for the TBPAC (the Straz) during its inception for wheelchair accessibility and ADA compliance.
Susan was preceded in death by her loving, adoring, and caring husband James Paul Vastine of Tampa FL, and her beloved younger brother Douglas McEwan of Rome Georgia. Survivors include her loving sons David M. Vastine and Ron C. Smith, sister-in-law, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May, 25th at 11 a.m. at St.Clements Episcopal Church 706 W 113th Ave Tampa, FL 33612, and a reception to follow.
By her wishes, the family requests that in Lieu of Flowers, donations be made to St. Clements Episcopal Church Tampa FL, Eckerd College Endowment, The USF Foundation for the Grace Allen Library Endowment, or the Grace Allen Clarion Society Scholarship.
