Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Tom graduated from Catonsville High School and spent time at the University of Baltimore, pursuing his education before his enlistment in the United States Air Force. He served in air traffic control in Morocco, a chapter of his life he rarely spoke about—except to note that it taught him how to eat incredibly fast and gave him the unlikely companionship of a pet iguana.
Tom spent over three decades with IBM, building a successful career that took him from Boston to Washington D.C., Richmond, Atlanta, Jacksonville, and finally Tampa. Along the way, he formed deep friendships with colleagues who remained close for decades—many still in touch more than 30 years after his retirement.
Beyond his career, Tom loved traveling with Carolyn. Together they explored Germany, Ireland, Alaska, the American West, the East Coast, and more—creating cherished memories that reflected their deep bond and shared curiosity.
He was a man of many passions. Tom was a talented bowler, often competing on teams with his father—a tradition that brought them both great joy. He loved golfing and was a familiar face at tournaments like the TPC, GTE Suncoast Classic, and the Verizon Senior Tour, where he volunteered for decades and enjoyed meeting the pros. He was a devoted Florida State football fan, proudly tailgating and cheering on the Seminoles. His pride ran deep, knowing both Jeff and Kristin graduated from FSU, Jeff's children carried on the tradition. While five of his grandchildren no longer live in Florida, they all bleed garnet and gold—a testament to the legacy he helped foster. Above all, Tom cherished his role as “Pop,” spending countless joyful hours supporting his grandchildren in their activities and simply being present with his family.
Tom was preceded in death by his sons, Jeff O’Brien (2003) and Kevin O’Brien (2015), and his brother, Richard O’Brien (2016). He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Carolyn; his daughter Kristin Witt; his 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
