Wanda is predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward "Dixie" Howell and brother, D.W. "Bill" Waters, Jr. (Sue). Wanda is survived by her adoring children Sharon McCallister (Gary), David Howell (Cheryl) and Edward Howell, Jr. (Jan); four grandchildren Mark McCallister (Melissa), Cara Minter (Chris), Jesse Howell (Shawon), and Eliana Howell; two step granddaughters, Natalie and Shannon; eight great grandchildren Meghan, Matthew, Brayden, Dylan, Devan, Dakota, Duncan, Dawson, and one more on the way; along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Wanda was born to Lena and D.W. "Bill" Waters in 1922 in Tampa, Florida. Wanda graduated from Hillsborough High School where she played clarinet in the band. She also played piano with a jazz band for social occasions and for weddings. As a student at the University of Tampa, Wanda majored in music and played in the band and orchestra and found time to play on the varsity basketball team. It was there, in 1942, that she met Dixie Howell. Wanda was Homecoming Queen and Dixie was co-captain of the football team. They were married at her parents’ home just before Dixie joined the US Navy during WWII.
August 1942 was not an easy time to get married. German U-boats sank many tons of allied shipping in the Gulf of Mexico. Wanda and Dixie’s honeymoon to Clearwater saw the coastal town under nightly blackouts! Dixie was called up for service soon after. A little more than two years later, Sharon was born just before he left on the USS Dayton to enemy waters in the Pacific. Dixie was called up for the Korean War while serving in the Naval Reserve. Once again, Wanda had to cope with being a wartime wife, but this time with three small children.
Wanda loved music and gave private piano lessons in her home. She played the piano and directed choirs for Lake Carroll Baptist Church. Her life centered around her family, friends, and church. She taught Sunday School, was active in PTA, and volunteered at a local school.
Wanda enjoyed family activities such as fishing, traveling, gardening, backyard bbq's, and family reunions. To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, Wanda and Dixie took the family on a cruise from San Francisco to Alaska. In her 80’s, she organized a Red Hat Society group for monthly luncheons, enjoyed neighborhood get togethers and once she drove three other ladies on a trip to the North Carolina mountains.
Wanda was loved by all who knew her. Her smile and positive attitude dominated the room. She enjoyed more than anything being surrounded by her family and friends.
