

In 1942 he joined the US Navy, served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific and lastly made San Diego his home port of call. His second career started in 1963 after he retired from the Navy as an electronics technician. His positions at General Dynamics and DataGraphix allowed him to travel all over the United States and Europe. He loved travel, the San Diego Zoo, birds (especially hummingbirds), a good joke, and enjoyed many years playing solid bogey golf.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three loving wives (Eleanor Galler Smith, Margrett Bay Smith, and Mickey Berner Haggin Smith), sister Marie Meiske Walker and brother Vernon Smith, sister-in-law Nelta Smith, and two stepdaughters Diane Sepke and Chris Owens.
Charlie is survived by two brothers John E. Smith, Jr. and James Smith, his daughter Barbara Galler-Smith and her husband John Archer, sister-in-law Isabell Smith, loving stepchildren Beverly Reeves, Heidi Holland (Gary Youngman), Laurie Novella (James Novella), Mark Berner (Joy) and Eric Berner. He leaves behind an extended blend of four generations of three families, cousins, and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the San Diego Zoo’s Africa Rocks exhibit.
