Lois was born January 6, 1928 to Jesse and Martin Zehner in Iowa. She grew up with her brother and two sisters on the family farm in Lawrenceville, Illinois. During World War II she met Carl Stern while attending nursing school, and they were married on October 22, 1949. She bravely moved away from her close knit family to the small farming community Hutto, Texas. Here she and Carl raised four children. Lois took on the challenge of living so far from her Illinois family by devoting herself to her family, church, and community. She generously devoted her time and energy to the Hutto community even after she started working as the supervisor of housekeeping for John’s Community Hospital. As grandchildren and great grandchildren entered her life, she became an amazing presence in their lives always available to take care of them and cook the weekly Sunday lunch.
Lois is preceded in death by her husband Carl and sister, Joyce Wesley. Lois is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Whitfield and husband Ron of Hutto; sons Bob Stern and wife Karin of Hutto; Dan Stern and wife Karen of San Antonio; and John Stern and wife Kathy of Austin. She is also survived by her grandchildren Joshua Whitfield and wife Laura, Megan Blackmon and husband Corey, Jenna Arnold and husband Martin, Mason Stern and fiancé Jennifer Hardi, Melanie Stern, Kristian Stern, Landry Stern, Mark Stern; great grandchildren Avery and Andrew Backmon; brother Charles Zehner and wife Lenore, sister Sally Zack, brother-in-law Dick Wesley, and brother-in-law Victor Stern and wife Bertha.

Lois loved the color red. The family would like to invite those who attend the service to wear a bit of red to honor this very special lady.
The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the loving staff at Hearthstone Health Center.
