

Pearl was born on a farm near Thorndale on August 15, 1930, to Walter & Lydia (Dutschmann) Schernik. She married William Pokorny on February 9, 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Thrall. They made their home in Taylor and were blessed with 65 years of marriage. Pearl worked as a homemaker, babysitter, loved to cook and sew, enjoyed playing bingo and dominoes and reading. Most of all Pearl was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Pearl was also known as Momma, Grandma, GeeMaw, and Aunt Pearl. While caring for her grandchildren, she enjoyed cooking meals for them and their friends, served as taxi getting them to and from school and events. She was a longtime, faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor, was a member and served as an officer for many years in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary at Post 4476 and was a member of the SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor for 72 years.
She is survived by her daughter Jessica Schmidt and husband David of Taylor; grandchildren Erin Supak and husband Rudy of Caldwell, Jordan Schmidt and wife Peggy of Round Rock, and Joanna Schmidt of Denton. Also, two great grandchildren, Lila Kate and Emmy Pearl Supak. Pearl is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Alice B. Schernik and Alice N. Schernik, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, infant son David Wayne Pokorny, as well as her parents, three brothers and a sister-in-law; Ben, Lawrence & Annie, and Curtis Schernik.
The family would like to express deep appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at the SPJST Nursing Home and also to Resolution Hospice staff for their loving care. You all are the greatest! Heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation goes out to Rev. Dr. George Qualley and Rev. Walter Miller for their faithful visits which she looked forward to and meant so much to her. Special thanks goes to Ms. Kamryn Yanez for generously sharing your time with Pearl, she loved your visits.
Pearl will be missed by her family and friends but never forgotten. She will be most remembered by her strong-willed and welcoming spirit.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 6 pm – 8 pm at Condra Funeral Home in Taylor. Services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 10 am. Burial will follow in the Taylor City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kermit, Douglas, and Bobby Schernik as well as, Harry, David, Marvin and Jimmy Pokorny. Honorary pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren, her dear and lifelong friends, LaVerne Frase, Elizabeth Raesz, Carlotta Lopez and very special friend Kamryn Yanez.
