

Velma Jean Kubala, age 78, of Taylor passed away Sunday May 8, 2016 in Bartlett, TX. She was born to Frank and Minnie (Hermina) (Novosad) Pokorny on February 16, 1938 in Taylor, TX. She graduated Taylor High Scholl in 1955 and married Alvin Kubala on June 22, 1957 in the Taylor Brethren Church. In 1959 she attended the UT School of Pharmacy and was one of only 2 women in her graduating Class. She had a fulfilling career. She started at Prewitt Drug in Rockdale, she was recognized as Outstanding Woman of The Year in 1967, and she worked at Pflennigs in Taylor until 1976 when the family moved to Lake Buchanan. There she continued working in Llano and Kingsland until she retired in 2000 and she and Alvin returned to live on the family farm in Circleville.
Velma loved working on retreats and summer camps. She sang in the church choir and played the organ. She served as the Aglow President of Marble Falls and was active for many years. Velma loved spending time with her grandsons at the lake. She attended every ball game she could, and she and PaPa took them on all kinds of trips. Everyone’s favorite was the coast. Velma was also one of the key figures in organizing the Cassie Volunteer Fire Department and EMS in the 1970’s, and she remained an active volunteer through the 1980’s.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Minnie (Hermina) (Novosad) Pokorny.
She is survived by her husband, Alvin Kubala of Granger; her daughter, Dawn and her husband Gordon Urbanek; her grandsons, Weston Urbanek and wife Savanna and Wade Urbanek and wife Lauren; her great grandchild, Riley Urbanek; and her numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday May 10, 2016 from 6pm-8pm at Condra Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday May 11, 2016 at 10 am at the Taylor Brethren Church with Rev Jimmy Hejl and Rev Larry Zabcik officiating. Burial will follow at Taylor City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Sidney Kubala, Sam Kubala, Don McMurry, Wayne Kubala, Marcel Ruzicka, and Teddy Grimm.
The Family would like to thank the staff at Will-O-Bell Nursing Home for the 7 years of wonderful care they gave Velma, the nursing staff truly became a second family, and Kindred at Home Hospice for helping Velma through her final days.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
