Laura was born June 24, 1946 in New York, New York, the daughter of Ann Laura (Newton) and John Francis Callaghan. Laura was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Tom Ahern; twin daughters, Kerry and Kelly Ahern; son, Brian Ahern. Also a daughter, Christine Connor and granddaughter, Holly Wilson.
Laura graduated from the Kings County School of Nursing in Manhattan, New York City. Earning a degree as a Registered Nurse and specializing in OB/GYN care. Knowing of her parent's plans to move to Florida, Laura decided to precede them by a year. While in Florida, she met her future husband (Tom), married, and the two started a family. Having twin daughters first (Kerry and Kelly), and later a son (Brian). She continued her career in nursing. First working in the delivery room at St. Joseph's Hospital and eventually retiring years later as a precertification nurse at Florida Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Laura was an avid reader and dedicated fan of the TV soap opera "The Young and The Restless". But one of her greatest enjoyments, was their annual family vacations on Sanibel Island. She enjoyed those family times together, swimming in the Gulf, walks on the beach, and making friends at poolside.
Being that her husband is a veteran, both Tom and Laura are entitled to be interred in a National Cemetery. Her father, a WWII veteran, is already buried at the Bay Pines National Cemetery. This is located in Pinellas County, just east of Maderia Beach. The family decided that would also be an appropriate final resting for Laura as well. She will be close to a member of her family and her beloved Gulf.
