Melba Jean Claudy, age 91 of San Antonio, Florida entered into rest Thursday, April 9, 2026. Born Melba Jean Hayworth on September 30, 1934, in Big Spring, Texas, she was the eldest child of Ambra and Doyle Hayworth.
In 1951, while living in San Diego, California, she met Bryan Claudy after literally skating into his life at a roller rink! After his brief deployment to Guam with the US Navy, they married on Easter Sunday in 1953 beginning a partnership that would span more than seven decades. Together they built a life rooted in service while raising their six children.
As Bryan served his country in the United States Navy, Melba would say that she was in the Navy too. Through moves across Japan, Morocco, England, and various areas in the United States she created stability wherever they landed.
Melba possessed a remarkable memory never forgetting a birthday, anniversary or historic detail. She kept family traditions alive, preserving recipes and family stories. She was a passionate traveler, avid gardener and a voracious reader.
Her legacy grew alongside her family. Her six children gave her 21 grandchildren, who in turn blessed her with 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She took immense pride in each of them, championing their accomplishments with enthusiasm and joy, never missing an opportunity to celebrate the people she loved most.
Melba’s passing at the age of 91 feels, in many ways, unimaginable. A force of nature so vibrant and constant leaves a space that cannot be filled.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, William "Dub" Hayworth, Ruth Westfall and John Hayworth; and her grandson, Jeffrey Claudy.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 73 years, Bryan Claudy; children, Michael Claudy (Penny), Rebecca Gregorchik (Ed), Steven Claudy (Eva "Pinky"), Margaret Flannery (Michael "Mick"), Jennifer MacDonald (Kenny) and David Claudy; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She will be missed beyond measure, mourned deeply, and remembered always, her legacy living on through the generations she shaped and the love she gave so freely.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Blount & Curry, Terrace Oaks Chapel, 12690 N. 56th Street, Temple Terrace, Florida 33617, on May 9, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
